saw a youtube video about last year's ao3 scrape for some AI site and i truly like....honestly could not give a fuck. sorry.

  1. i am legally forbidden from making money on this stuff anyway.
  2. feeding all of ao3 into an LLM is not going to produce anything interesting or good.
  3. even if it DID produce something interesting or good, there is already plenty of good fanfiction that isn't written by me, and that does not harm me.
  4. none of this is going to produce a "replicate my personal writing style" machine. but even if someone did train a model specifically on all of my work and asked it to create something in my style. that would be kind of creepy and strange, but it still would not harm me. it wouldn't mean i couldn't write more fanfiction and it wouldn't mean nobody would read my work anymore.

ao3's statement on this topic kinda cuts to the core of the issue: "It is an unfortunate reality that anything that is publicly available online can be used for reasons other than its initial intended purposes."

it's truly like. sorry!!! putting your work out there means that people have free rein to misinterpret it, or criticize it, or write the same idea in their own words, or print it out and make blackout poetry of it! if someone is wholesale plagiarizing your work and posting it back on the site, ao3 has multiple mechanisms to resolve this. otherwise you gotta shrug and move on. your work being repurposed in ways you don't like can feel bad, but like. unfortunately, if you create fanworks, there is no way to come after uses of your work that you don't like without kicking yourself in the face in the process.

Whether or not the letter Tara got was actually from the FBI or it was AI-gen(or both), we will NOT do the thing that always happens to trans women: massive internet angry mob whose goal is to cast doubt on anything a trans woman says. The thrust of Knight's message is STILL TRUE, this administration hates transfeminism and is targeting trans women for removal from all social spheres. That transfeminism IS a threat to the existing status quo.
