With every single sub i have the first thing we ever do is establish the safe word (stoplight system), and the non-verbal safe word in case they can't talk for any reason. If I can't tell where the sub is at, I will ask them point blank what is their color, and if they can't give a response, we stop. The goal is to make the other person feel good, including pain, and the most important part us knowing your subs limits and LISTENING to them. I will *never* hurt a sub in a way that they have not explicitly expresssed interest in.

If my years of being in the fandom have taught me anything, it’s that at best, Optimus and Megatron switch dom/sub roles, but it’s more likely that Prime is the sub.

Every time I post about some bit of tabletop roleplaying esoterica, the replies immediately confront me with the fact that a large portion of this blog's followership seemingly genuinely has no idea what a tabletop RPG is, which is kind of fascinating given who I am and what I do. Like, who are you people, and why are you here?

(To be 100% clear, when I say "has no idea what a tabletop RPG is", I don't mean, like, hasn't heard of the latest trends in short-form GMless indie storygaming, or whatever. I mean in the sense that every other week I have to explain to some earnest fucker in my DMs that no, Dungeons & Dragons is not "like Monopoly".)

I didn't need to adjust the wording when cross-posting because I legitimately have the exact same issue on my Bluesky blog, too.

I feel like I should file this away for the next time I hear or see someone say "RPGs aren't niche anymore - they're mainstream and everyone knows what they are!"

(If you're wondering how often I encounter this - at least once a week, occasionally from major gaming news sites and podcasts like Rascal).

It can help to bear in mind that a thing being mainstream is not mutually exclusive of large numbers of people having no idea what it is. There are plenty people in this world who genuinely have no idea that most genres of video games exist, too – in their minds, "video games" means, like, Pac-Man and Space Invaders.

(You sometimes see this confusion in Foley work in contemporary television, oddly enough; I've literally seen a TV show that dubbed chiptune bloops over footage of a character playing Doom Eternal!)

Could the latter be a licensing issue? Like game footage is fair use somehow, but they need to use “license-free” sounds from 70s console games because the fee for Doom Guy is too expensive?
