The next phase of my romantasy research is Fourth Wing. About halfway through at this point and while I wouldn’t describe this book as “good” I at least appreciate that it doesn’t take itself too seriously

Ended up enjoying this book a LOT more than I expected but I don’t think I’d say it was good. Like it’s a nice fast-paced, breezy read, the action scenes are solid and I found myself getting surprisingly invested in the romance but I totally get why so many people love dunking on this book. The telling to showing ratio is abysmal, there’s an abundance of cringe, and the big twist near the end provokes some enormous cinema sins dings so like…. Idk 5/10 but I at least have more respect for the Fourth Wing girls than the ACOTAR girls. I’m a fucking Love Live fan I know what it feels like to get way too deep into a 5/10

who cares if you don’t fully “get” the weird postmodernist novel on your first read, or if the experimental arthouse film is opaque to you on your first viewing? you are not being graded. you are not being scored. there is value in the attempt. every time i’ve read House of Leaves or watched Blue Velvet, I’ve gotten something new from it. the idea that you might not “get” something and therefore shouldn’t bother with it is so silly to me
