5 Tiny Writing Tips That Aren’t Talked About Enough (but work for me)

These are some lowkey underrated tips I’ve seen floating around writing communities — the kind that don’t get flashy attention but seriously changed how I write.

1. Put “he/she/they” at the start of the sentence less often.

Try switching up your sentence rhythm. Instead of

“She walked to the window,”

try

“The window creaked open under her touch.”

Keeps it fresh and stops the paragraph from sounding like a checklist.

2. Don’t describe everything — describe what matters.

Instead of listing every detail in a room, pick 2–3 objects that say something.

“A half-drunk mug of tea and a knife on the table”

sets a way stronger tone than

“There was a wooden table, two chairs, and a shelf.”

3. Use beats instead of dialogue tags sometimes.

Instead of:

"I'm fine," she said.

Try:

"I'm fine." She wiped her hands on her skirt.

It helps shows emotion, and movement.

4. Write your first draft like no one will ever read it.

No pressure. No perfection. Just vibes. The point of draft one is to exist. Let it be messy and weird — future you will thank you for at least something to edit.

5. When stuck, ask: “What’s the most fun thing that could happen next?”

Not logical. Not realistic. FUN. It doesn’t have to stay — but chasing excitement can blast through writer’s block and give you ideas you actually want to write.

One time Wally found out about dogs being able to howl and he was confused on what howling was so he asks barnaby about it and Barnaby demonstrated it. Then one thing led to another, Barnaby ends up teaching or trying to teach Wally how to howl.

En uno de ellos, Barnaby le pregunta amablemente a Wally si puede acariciar su cabello. Wally acepta con la misma tranquilidad de siempre, y entonces Barnaby lo peina con la mano con calma y cuidado, asegurándose de que ningún mechón se escape de su perfecto pompadour.

Esto lo pensé por qué se que Wally le gusta la cercanía de Barnaby.

Barnaby and Wally, when they rest and have time to relax or simply observe their surroundings, often share quiet moments. In one of them, Barnaby politely asks Wally if he can stroke his hair. Wally accepts with his usual calmness, and then Barnaby calmly and carefully combs his hair with his hand, making sure that not a single strand escaped his perfect pompadour.

I thought of this because I know Wally likes being close to Barnaby.

Ooh! I got a headcanon! (Well, it was more of a short story I had made up in my head a while back!)

I figured that when Wally was having that interview, he was actually in New York and Barnaby had accompanied him (Wally was told to bring a friend along so naturally, despite him wanting to bring everyone, he chose Barnaby.) I like to think Barn joked about how New York was called The Big Apple, but Wally is so confused. He doesn't understand.

They get in all sorts of shenanigans, like seeing the movie theatres, clubs, comedy shows, so many hot dog stands (once when Barnaby was getting the two of them a hot dog by a subway station, Wally had wandered off to one of the subways and accidentally got kidnapped by it. Oh, Barn freaked out a bit, trying to run after him with two hot dogs)

And, after all that, the two of them took a nice walk through Central Park, in the dead of night. They talk about the not so small world outside the neighborhood, the people they could meet, the adventures of possibity, and how Wally gets to see the stars for once in his life. He always wondered what they looked like. That was a night he would never forget...

The two of them decide the next time they ever get an opportunity to see the outside world like this, they'd find the next park to walk in. And see the ocean this time, too!

Well there is actually, they’re friends. They’re friends and they love each other and it doesn’t mean any less than if they were dating and they loved each other. They’re friends and that means devotion and affection and loyalty and love, and there is no point in which that love reaches a level that immediately indicates that their relationship must be romantic.
