I'm thoroughly impressed by the details of cleaning sequence. I wonder if it was maybe actually designed backwards? Because it had to be a challenge, to get it all together.

- frantic cleaning sequence shows THE most intense and efficient... 30? 20? minutes of cleaning in the history of mankind (ex aequo with many others who also got the despair boost) (I deeply appreciate zigzag panel lines there and opposite zigzag of sound effects!)

- the after is. Still bad. Still very bad. Someone could think there was never any cleaning in the first place. But we know better. It's messy but... normal messy. Readable zones. Visible floor.

- And these both can fit each other only because the before is designed so thoughtfully to imply the incredible mess. And, the third page. Even the lettering is perfect! To show that visual clutter that most people equate with mess (good for them) is Airplane's least worry. Dampness, mold, microbiological risk factors, smell suggesting thriving fungal-bacterial colonies: the lettering feel... damp. Almost like it collapsed here and there under its own soggy weight. And the curves of the whole page composition, lettering working with panels' borders and perspective.

To get "so messy", "so much cleaning", and "so much cleaner yet still so messy" together, and make it feel so realistic and natural. I'm impressed.

And this desperate "you're too rich to get inside". Yeah it DOES sound stupid. But also. Yes it perfectly summarizes the issue. "I think you might not even imagine with how many things you take for granted it's possible to struggle without money and I'm ashamed you might learn from me." "I don't want you to know how bad it is."

...it somehow makes me feel better about my dirty depression phases back in days, you know? It's easy to excuse Airplane. Of course it's hard to keep clean a space that was never designed for easy upkeep, and while having no money and no energy left. But I really don't remember the dirty mess being shown in visual media... this sympathetically. It was usually, you know, a visual signifier of how low has a character fallen, a shorthand for having already lost, and here it feels more like... a colateral of him still putting up a fight. I really don't know. Is it my interpretation or is it your narrative? What is different in how you show his mess? Maybe something of it is how realistic this mess is, and the recurring details showing how systemic it is – mold, humidity and broken blinds are hardly Airplane's fault. Something to think about, I'll need to put more attention to details in the future.

Oh. And. The color. How the moment Cucumber stays in the door both of them have intense orange outline. I don't know WHAT it makes me feel or what I think about it, but I see it and it makes me feel SOMETHING.

And how once he comes in, formerly fully colorless room gets almost radiant. But actually, it's just laptop, the bag (the bag he takes outside), and the floor. It seems really smart move to color the floor. First: it's the part of the room that feels the least part of the room, the closest this panel has to background. Two: the color helps show how imperfect it is (darker and lighter shapes here and there suggest unremovable stains, it wouldn't look this good in shades of grey). Third: I bet this floor wasn't so empty and visible just moment before, Airplane uncovered the floor because Cucumber was coming. In a way, this floor right now is more about Cucumber than the life Airplane doesn't want to think about.

And! As ALWAYS! THE FACES! THE POSES! Microexpressions! Macroexpressions!

Mostly, the body language on the last panel. It gets to me. Shen Yuan looks... very normal. Neutral. Like a person in an entirely new environment who tries to gather information and orient himself without giving out too much. Either he really doesn't have any hurtful assumptions or he does his best not to show them. (Both good.) But our boy also looks very normal and oh gosh, how uncomfortable he is. I feel it in my bones. It's so awfully sad. He cannot do anything but wait for the verdict. He's trying so hard to look normal. He even manages. And yet, the way he stands. Ouchie.

If it's not the perfect example of low-stakes cliffhanger that's still heart-wrenching then I don't know what is

So, I'll try to react and answer !

The main challenge with the cleaning sequence was to convey the quick action of Airplane. And while I'm glad at drawing contemplating panels, I lack of experience with drawing actions panels. So it was a first for me ! I sketched vaguely the idea into the storyboard and I've not changed much at the lineart ! I was very hesitant about the "sound effect" of the panel. I was afraid they were much and hide too much of the drawings. But after getting advise from my comic maker friend, I've decided to keep it !

And thank you ! Mess is something really intimate to draw cause I have to really think about all the belongings of Airplane. I have a lot of empathy for him, about (but not only) his unsanitary flat. I haven't really thought about it, but I watch sometime deep cleaning video, with people who has home in really, really bad state. Mainly, the people who do the cleaning explains the difficulties of the house's owner. Disability, accident, loss, depression, getting fired... There's so much things we couldn't imagine the person is going through. So much things the person can't control. And maybe it has impacted how I drew Qinghua's apartment. I try to have kindness in my representation.

And yeah, the orange floor indicative of sqh's cleaning FOR Shen Yuan !

Speaking of Shen Yuan. He has A LOT to process. First time seeing his bro's place. I think he never, ever imagine someone could live like this, even less his friend, cause it is so outside of his reality.

He has a lot to process and at the same time they have so much to talk about, unrelated. it probably wouldn't be the first subject to talk about. Idk
