Changes is the debut album from indie/folk/rock outfit And The Broken, based in Malmö, Sweden. The band released five EPs between 2022 and 2024, but the album consists entirely of new songs, recorded in the home of singer Tobias Borelius and in the band's rehearsal space. The album's nine songs were recorded by the band and mixed by Andreas Ejnarsson and Linus Lindvall.
Into The Black – Tobias and Johan met up a day before the rest of the band and recorded the basic tracks for the song, written by Johan Hellsten. Influenced by Australian bands from the 1980s and Greg Dulli, the song has a melancholic atmosphere. The cello, played by the young Nelly Karinsdotter Pålsson, gives it a unique touch.
The first recordings of Changes took place in the winter of 2023, when guitarist Linus Lindvall visited Tobias’s home. Initially influenced by Dinosaur Jr., the song gradually took on more of a laid-back American West Coast summer vibe. The saxophone, played by Svante Svärd—a jazz student and a friend of Tobias’s son—along with the mellotron, added to the sunny atmosphere.
The verse and chorus of June were originally written by Tobias before the band added the intro and guitar riffs. The odd one out here is the ukulele, which plays a key role in shaping the sound. The song is about a teenager in search of their true self—based on a true story.
Running Out of Time is a soulful, laid-back song with a pop/folk feel. The trumpet, played by Jens Lindgård, makes the song instantly memorable. Released as a single in August, it received strong reviews, with comparisons to Fleet Foxes and Mumford & Sons. The lyrics were originally about a bird, but influenced by the band's critics, the theme shifted to aging.
Linus sent a late-night SMS to Tobias in the middle of summer, sharing the idea for a new song. It’s notable for not having drums or bass—just acoustic guitars, vocals, and cello, once again played by Nelly Karinsdotter Pålsson.
Polaroid & Cardboard Boxes began as a single song, but after months of experimenting, they naturally evolved into two distinct tracks. A good decision? We think so. Together, they tell the story of a relationship under pressure. Is it love that’s fading—or just two people growing in different directions? Do they break apart, or simply move on to a new chapter?
Modern World was originally written by Tobias Borelius as a short, introspective song. But as the band added their own flavor—and Svante Svärd contributed saxophone—it transformed into something reminiscent of a Velvet Underground blues track. The lyrics are clear: "Crazy people rule the world."
Tobias wrote Me After Midnight after a night out with Jonatan—a dear friend who also created the artwork for the album and earlier singles. Jonatan wanted to stay out, but after midnight, Tobias admits he’s not great company.
The album will be released on all digital platforms on October 8, 2025.
