Kate never liked wearing dresses even as a child but her mother always forced her
She was always really muscular (because of sport) and tall and because of that she was treated differently than the other girl
Since she grew up in New York in privileged spaces, she never felt like she had to conform, she always felt really confident with how she presented
In high school she learns about everything lgbt+ and about gender norms and everything. She learns that she can have fun with gender expression, but she doesn’t really have friends/partners with whom she can explore all of that
In uni, she buys a binder and she discovers that some days it feels good, others it doesn’t
My hc for yelena is that she is so girlish, like she love wearing dresses and having long hair and extravagant makeup. She is longing to be the girl she couldn’t be, the one with the dog and the parties and the sister.
She has never been with anyone other than men, so when she start dating Kate, she doesn’t really know what to do.
When she finds Kate’s binders, while Kate is in the shower and she is being nosy, yelena is really confused. She doesn’t know why Kate would wear it. But Kate explain to her how she doesn’t really feel like a woman but she doesn’t feel like a man either but it feels good and yelena really listen.
They talk about it, Kate’s point of view and yelena says “I’ve never had to think about it, I have just always been a women” and she realizes it’s like everything else, something that was assigned to her, a performance.
They talk about which pronouns Kate prefers, gender identities (Kate like the terms genderfluid), nicknames, and limits. And at the end yelena teases Kate “so are you my boyfriend now?” And Kate stutters (she loves it).
Yelena presents kate as her boyfriend to a confused alexei, after a night of shenanigans he tells kate “you are good boyfriend for my yelena”
Kate loves all the new little things that they do after that discussion. Like yelena helping her with her tie and then placing her hands on her flattened chest, or yelena jokingly making them soap beards during their joined showers/bath, or helping her with her makeup when she feels like presenting more femme.
A few years into their relationship, yelena cut her hair really short. When kate see her, wearing a tank top and a baseball cap, she says “now you are the boyfriend” and yelena replies “we can both be boyfriends”
