One of my favourite things about LotR is that Boromir and Pippin have the same rank. Like, there's a reason Tolkien sends Pippin to Minas Tirith while Merry stays with the Rohirrim. The only REAL difference is that Pippin is legally a child (Merry and Sam are only recently adults themselves), which is why he ends up hanging out with Bergil, and why he doesn't have a job at home yet.

(Frodo is the only one I would say doesn't have a job, in that he has very limited responsibilities in the Shire. He would have been one of Merry's adjuncts if his parents had lived. As Bilbo's heir*, he's basically a Gentleman Scholar.)

(Merry and Sam end up with similar ranks, in terms of responsibility, even though Sam is elected. Both of them are subject to Pippin, which is of course hilarious. After Aragorn makes it illegal for Men, including himself, to enter the Shire, there is no indication that this changes, even when an additional Hobbit community is founded by Elanor and Fastred.)

*Bungo Baggins married up by a LOT, and there is every indication that Belladonna loved the crap out of him for it. The Baggins money is almost entirely Took money now (Bungo was not poor by any stretch of the imagination, but Belladonna brought a LOT to that marriage), which is a big part of the reason they don't want the money or the house going to the Sackville-Bagginses.
