The door to the bakery slammed open, making Rosalyn jump from where she was angrily rolling out dough. When she saw it was Mistlynn standing in the doorway her eyes narrowed accusingly.
“Well, by Aule’s beard. Look what the cave troll drug in.” Rosalyn placed her flour covered hands on her hips.
Mistlynn sighed wearily. “Scold me later.” She walked in, her boots dragging against the stone floor as she walked over to the front counter.
“Why wait to say what needs to be said now?” Rosalyn quipped saucily, not once taking her eyes away from her. “You, for lack of a better term, attacked the King, accused him of courting another, then tried to leave Erebor without telling me!”
Her steadily rising outrage made her voice break at the pinnacle of her tirade.
“I was caught up in the moment. I am sorry.” Mistlynn muttered as she walked behind the counter to stand next to her livid friend. “I knew if I came here, I wouldn’t be able to leave. You would have talked me out of it and stopped. And I didn’t want to be stopped … If that is any consolation.” She leaned her weight fully against the counter before sliding down until she was sitting on the ground, her knees to her chest.
Rosalyn hummed. “And yet your still here. What made you change your mind.”
Mistlynn sighed. “He stopped me at the gate.” She was chewing on her bottom lip as she stared into the back where the brick oven was still aflame.
Rosalyn tossed her head back and laughed. “Oh, he did, did he? And since you’re here and not in the dungeons, you both came to terms.”
Mistlynn reached up over her head and grabbed one of the cinnamon rolls that were on display for sale. She took a big bite out of the roll, still refusing to look up at her friends face. “Of sorts.” She muttered, mouth full.
“Explain? It’s the least you can do, considering the fact you were planning on abandoning me.”
She swallowed, as if pained. “I’m not in the dungeons?”
Before Rosalyn could admonish her, the door to the bakery opened abruptly, making the bell toll over the door. Mistlynn’s eyes widen comically. Rosalyn can’t help the smirk that shows up on her face.
“Your Grace.” Rosalyn greeted.
“I know she’s in here.” Mistlynn heard Dis deadpan.
“Leave me in peace.” Mistlynn groaned as she took another bite of her roll.
“I will not. There is no peace for the wicked, Mist. And you have been wicked indeed.” Dis clucked as she approached the counter and leaned against it.
Mistlynn rolled her eyes, making Rosalyn snicker before she looked at Dis expectantly. “She won’t tell me what happened after he stopped her from leaving. “
“That’s why I came here. I am curious myself. I saw my brother walking back, with a face as smug as a cat who got the cream.” Dis rested her chin upon her hand as she leaned over the counter, peering down far enough to see the top of Mistlynn’s head.
Mistlynn groaned, her cheeks stuffed with the cinnamon confection. “He told me that Briela was playing me for a fool. And I apologized for attacking him!” she huffed, not caring in the slightest that crumbs fell out of her mouth onto the tops of her knees.
“What else?” Dis pressed, as both her and Rosalyn’s eyes narrowed in suspicion.
“He told me to not run away again.” Mistlynn rolled her eyes as she reached above her for another roll.
Rosalyn swatted her hand away. “Nuh uh. You dont get another one until you tell us the full story.”
Mistlynn growled as she spun around so that she was sitting on her knees. She eyed each one of her friends. “Fine. After he had Dwalin take my weapons he literally threw me over his shoulder and took me into a room and set me down and didn’t let me leave until he explained to me what Briela was trying to do because of the courting gift he was preparing for me, and then he kissed me to where I could barely think straight! There? You happy? You infernal harpies?” By the time she was done with her rant her face was crimson.
She held out her hand for a roll, which Rosalyn gave her happily as she began to jump on her toes and squeal. “Och!! I knew it! I knew he was going to ask you soon!” Rosalyn’s freckled cheeks were rosy with excitement as she clapped her hands.
Dis was grinning. “Mahal! Finally! And when is he going to give you your first courting gift? When will he announce it?”
Mistlynn took another bite of the roll as she sat back against the counter again. “He told me the end of this week. And that he would announce it at the ball. “
Dis and Rosalyn both giggled, their excitement for the news making it sink in even more. She only had five days. “I wasn’t planning on attending the ball.” She murmured as she felt dread start to sink in. ‘I don’t even own a dress.”
“Dori and I planned your dress weeks ago.” Dis looked smug as she wiggled her eyebrows at Mistlynn, who looked at her in disbelief. “Whether he was going to make his intentions known or not, you were always going to go. I was going to make sure of it. You are a princess after all. It is my duty to see that you are properly introduced as such.”
“An outcasted princess. I was removed from succession. Hardly anyone of note.” Mistlynn grumbled moodily, not sure how to feel about Dis being three steps ahead of her at all times.
Dis gave a pointed look at Rosalyn, ignoring Mistlynn’s petulant look. “I had the liberties of having a gown made for you as well.” Her eyes twinkled mischievously. “Dori still had measurements from the last time you came in.”
Rosalyn blinked in shock. “What? I wasn’t planning on going. I have far too much to do here. I have orders to fill.”
Dis wagged a finger at her. “Bombur has offered a few of his bakers to come in and cover for you. You will be accompanying me since I am widow and are in dire need of company.”
Mistlynn gave her a skeptical look as Rosalyn began to stammer. “Why would Master Bombur offer his own bakers, surely he needs them in the kitchens?”
“Oh, dont you fret about it. He knows how shorthanded you are and that you gave your assistant permission to attend already. They will be able to complete your orders and attend with plenty of time to spare.” The ebony haired dam clapped her hands together. “Well, I must leave you now. So much to do, so little time. I’ll see you ladies tomorrow. We will have to do fittings with Dori to make sure everything will fit properly.” Dis waved over her shoulder as she walked out of the bakery, leaving a stunned Rosalyn and a still eating Mistlynn.
“I don’t know what to think about that…” Rosalyn began as she looked down at Mistlynn.
“Now you know how it feels. She knows and sees all.” Mistlynn sighed as she shoved the rest of her roll into her mouth, completely resigned to the events of the day.
