Always embarrassing realizing you don't know basic facts about your friends. Like yeah hey, here's this person I love dearly, I've known them for 23 years, we've been through so much together. “If you look only at the trend of species declines, it would be easy to think that we’re failing to protect biodiversity, but you would not be looking at the full picture,” said Penny Langhammer, lead author of the study and Executive Vice President of Re:wild. “What we show with this paper is that conservation is, in fact, working to halt and reverse biodiversity loss. It is clear that conservation must be prioritized and receive significant additional resources and political support globally, while we simultaneously address the systemic drivers of biodiversity loss, such as unsustainable consumption and production.”
This massive meta analysis (for those not familiar, a study analyzing the results of many studies on similar topics) found that the vast majority of conservation efforts show much much better results than doing nothing. In many cases, biodiversity loss was not only stopped but reversed.
This shows that conservation efforts really work and money invested is put to very good use. Legally protecting endangered species really works, restoring habitat really works, removing invasive species really works, returning land to Indigenous communities works. All of the blood, sweat, and tears being poured into protecting the natural world has been making a real, big, tangible, difference on a global scale.

Ich habe gestern meine Brille vergessen, und war also unbebrillt draußen unterwegs. Habe unterwegs von weitem ein totes Tier am Straßenrand bemerkt, und dachte mir noch "och, wie traurig, armes Eichhörnchen".
Als ich ein paar Schritte weiter dann auf Höhe mit dem "Eichhornkadaver" war, wurde mir klar dass das gar kein Hörnchen war. Das war nicht mal ein Tier.

I live by the motto, “if you can’t buy what you want, make it.” And this motto came to life recently in the form of a floral mosaic dining table for my back deck.
Our deck table had been showing its age already when the wind caught the umbrella and cracked it. I wanted to replace it with a mosaic table because I’d been enjoying that art form recently. But I couldn’t get one the size I wanted so I got creative.
I spent a few weeks looking for tile and figuring out a very loose design concept. I started by picking a limited set of tile shapes and a color palette.
Once the tiles arrived I had a piece of particle board cut to size for the base and I experimented with different motifs until I settled on a selection of floral shapes that gave me plenty of variety to fill space without locking me into one repeating pattern.
And then I was off! I basically doodled my way around the table, attaching tiles with Weld Bond (I went through 4 full bottles!) and rocking out to the K-Pop Demon Hunters soundtrack.
Once the florals were done it was time for the background…
Over 3,800 1cm glass tiles make up the not-design part of the design. It went pretty quickly though because I just had to fill the space, leaving room for grout.
Once I had the tile done, my husband assisted with disassembly and reassembly. We used the legs off the original table for this one (waste not).
One huge bucket of black grout later…
She is finished.
I enjoyed making it and just looking at it makes me so happy - I can’t wait for all the dinners we’ll have around this table 🌼❤️

I have impressed my mom by knowing how to fold a fitted sheet nicely and I can't ever tell her this video is how I learned.

This picture of a UPS worker delivering a package on 9/11 right after the second tower was hit is so fascinating to me. I totally would have used two buildings being blown up and the city infrastructure pausing as an excuse to not do my job. Just go back to the depot and call it a day. But no he’s bravely delivering that Backstreet Boys poster or whatever while everyone else stares at the buildings behind him in shock. Went “Well, that sucks. Can’t do anything about it I guess.”
His kids asking him where he was on 9/11 and he’s like “I was there. One block away. Didn’t see anything because I was delivering a Phantom Menace poster.”
I know I keep mentioning it but the fact the thing he’s delivering is so visibly poster shaped is so hilarious. Like if it was a big box labeled MEDICINE, KEEP REFRIGERATED or something visibly important, this photo would be a famous, used as patriotic propaganda about duty in the face of adversity. But this guy delivering what is almost certainly a poster while the South Tower collapses is almost an act of absurdism.
Unironically I think this is one of the best photos I've ever seen. I'm going wild over it. I want to burn it into my brain forever. This is someone the next town over from Pompeii bringing their brand new toga home while Vesuvius erupts in the distance. This is a Londoner eating dinner while the air raid sirens blast. This is anyone doing anything back in 2020, really. The action of delivering a poster may be hilariously specific but the concept is universal. This expresses some fundamental element of what it is to be human. This is art, straight up.
Folks, it's the business district, and this was 25 years ago before everything was electronic. That's probably blueprints or something.
Also, it was the early 2000s. You got your Backstreet Boys or Phantom Menace poster at Spencer's, in person, which was the way you did almost all of your purchasing.

Like yeah the world is burning but we still have to stock shelves, work the register, or send emails and it feels surreal
My husband and I were just talking about that. "There's a paramilitary staging in the parking lot of the shopping center up the street, it feels ridiculous that we need to buy toilet paper."
