Ephemeral Dreams

For me, censorship laws are a lot like the death penalty. There are people I wish would die, but I don’t want the government to have any say over who lives or dies (because then they can stretch laws out to justify killing someone they dont like). There are stories that I think are reprehensible and should have never been written, but I don’t want the government to have any say over which stories are reprehensible (because then they can stretch out what they deem wrong out to fit anything they don’t like)

So just finished reading Utage’s operator record. And I love her so much.

Spoilers for it below

Like I know that it’s just part of the way Gacha game fandoms work but I do not get turning the Doctor into some Self-Insert sex god because to me the Idea of them having sex just doesn’t compute.

Do you want to be politically pure in theory or help your neighbor. Is it fruitless to help your neighbor because there’s no Perfect Pure way to do it ?

Honestly I would rather be politically pure. Your neighbors would never help you, so why help them?

Youre who this post is talking about. Individualism and elitism is not going to help the revolution and grassroots activism and mutual aid.

When the pandemic hit this old church lady joined our tattooed queer leftist mutual aid group bc her church soup kitchen closed. We shrugged and told her she was welcome as long as she didn’t proselytize.

That woman never gendered me right once, but she shut up about Jesus long enough to feed people next to us bc she cared more about action than ideology. She also had a whole network of other church people who helped contribute $ to ingredients. We provided more and better meals together than in our “correct” silos

That’s how any of us get out of any of this

The retirees who volunteer at my nonprofit have a wide variety of opinions, many of which I disagree with. But a) they still choose to give their time and labor to keep my org running, and b) when we were doing a school supply drive for local schools they got their families and churches involved and we had enough good, new, high quality backpacks and school supplies to deliver to hundreds of low-income students who otherwise wouldn’t have them.

Also, how are you going to convince anybody to change their minds if you refuse to help or associate with them?

Just a reminder that Vertin hand feeding others is pretty much a canonical thing.

Sonetto makes sense, but Matilda waiting with her mouth open like a little bird for her level up is also adorable. Vertin is feeding the ducks.

Pretty sure she fed Sonetto popcorn here too during Sotheby’s anecdote. Also more evidence of Vertin paying attention to the things Sonetto likes since she chose a flavor for her, but they don’t tell is which “color.”

A flavor sweet but exciting like a first love perhaps.

“very guilty and problematic client” holy copaganda batman

let’s start parsing who does and doesn’t deserve representation and assign moral weight to agreeing to protect their rights I don’t see how this could possibly go wrong

The purpose of a defence attorney is to make sure the police have done their job. The prosecution says “they did the thing” and the defence says “well can you prove it?” and if they can’t, the defendant goes free because the prosecution fucked up.

All they have to do is their job. As long as they don’t fuck up doing ther job, the guilty will go to prison. The reason the guilty go free so often is because the police are constantly fucking up and not doing their damn job.

It’s very telling that these people can’t really conceive of a situation where they might be wrongfully arrested for something and labeled “very problematic and guilty” and may, in fact, need exactly the kind of legal representation that they’re side-eyeing. Even in the realm of thought experiments there are the categorically “"problematic”“ and they can’t even imagine a world where they could ever be lumped in with them, even wrongfully, because surely people would OBVIOUSLY know they’re innocent, surely this only happens to Others

#even if the client is totally guilty#the defense attorney’s job is still to make sure they’re treated fairly#even guilty people should not be abused by the system because no one wanted to speak up for them#once again as soon as we decide some people don’t deserve rights#we’re on a fast track to no one has rights

If you’re in the US, now is a great time to talk to the young people in your life about the US military:

  • The recruiter is not your friend. The military employs child psychologists to learn how to make you think the recruiter is your friend.
  • The recruiter is allowed to lie to you and makes more money if they do.
  • The recruiter is paid a commission to groom children into cannon fodder.
  • The recruiter will tell you you’re special and will go into special smart soldier programs instead of combat. They’re lying.
  • The recruiter may tell you they can tell if someone can get PTSD or not and only recruit people like you, who won’t. They’re lying.
  • The recruiter may tell you you’ll be too busy attending free college (!!) to go overseas. They’re lying.
  • The recruiter may ask what countries you want to travel to and promise you bougie placements on military bases in those countries. They’re lying.
  • Even “It’s just four years!” is a lie - the government is allowed to hold you past your enlistment period with a stop-loss order.
  • The recruiter actually has zero power to decide anything that happens to you after you enlist and they more importantly don’t care what happens to you.
  • If you enlist, you will be brainwashed to make you willing to do things to other humans that you would never be willing to do today.
  • You will be ordered to do things that will kill children. And you’ll do them.
  • The military is not the only way or even the best way for you to go to college or start a career.
  • Military brainwashing will actually make you into a terrible university student because it degrades your ability to think critically and question your sources.
  • Having PTSD and/or a TBI will make it harder to be a student and keep a job.
  • Veterans’ benefits suck these days.
  • Being a veteran drastically increases your risk of homelessness, suicide, alcohol and drug dependence, prison time, and becoming an abuser to your loved ones.
  • The military will expose you to chemicals that will drastically increase your chances of developing cancer.
  • The military will withhold information about your rights to conscientiously object after enlisting.
  • A lot can change in four years.

Well I certainly didn’t expect to illicit so many questions when I reblogged this post and added some tags about jumping spider content online.

Firstly, let me say there’s nothing wrong with keeping jumping spiders as pets. I have one myself. She’s a captive bred regal jumping spider. She’s currently a bit over two years old. I’ve had other jumping spiders as well, but they passed of old age and in one instance, a failed molt, which is fairly common.

Before and after getting pet jumpers, I joined some jumper groups, read a lot of care guides, and watched a slew of videos about keeping them.

It became obvious pretty quickly that apparently due to their cute fuzzy appearance, large round eyes, and intelligent behavior, people (owners, admirers, and popular content creators) assign human and mammal emotions and behaviors to them, often to their detriment.

I personally believe bugs are complex creatures that can be intelligent and have emotions, but that those emotions and behaviors are NOT analogous to human or mammal behavior and ignoring their natural needs and behaviors means you’re likely not providing proper care for them.

This is mainly about handling. Bugs don’t want to be handled. They get nothing positive out of it emotionally. They don’t want to be pet or cuddle with you. They don’t want to hang out with you. You’re a big scary predator, and it likely wants to get away from you. Forcing handling can stress, injure, or kill them. That’s why I tagged the post (linked above) “your spider is not a cat.” It doesn’t seek affection from you.

I can’t tell you how many posts or videos I saw where people were super upset because they let their jumper out of its enclosure to handle it and it either escaped and got lost or they somehow crushed it and killed or injured it badly. I’ve also seen people chasing their jumper around its enclosure trying to grab it or get it to jump onto their hand when it’s clearly just trying to hide.

As an example, a very common thing I’ve seen in videos about jumpers is people saying when they lift their front legs at you and jump or climb onto you/your hands it’s because they “want uppies” and want to be pet and be close to you. This is a wild misreading of behavior. Sometimes raising the front legs is a defensive display, trying to make itself look larger to scare away a threat. Other times, they’re waving their legs around to sense and feel their environment, or preparing to jump onto something. They are arboreal, and their natural behavior is to find a high vantage point, so climbing onto the big thing (you) nearby is normal. It’s not because it seeks your affection.

Certainly if you DO handle them frequently they can get used to it, and it becomes less stressful for them. But in my opinion the dangers outweigh any positives, and I don’t handle mine. These are wild animals that have not been domesticated, even when captive bred. If you want to give them enrichment, and you should, offer them prey to chase or interesting things to explore in a larger enclosure. For those that do still handle them, I’d encourage you to watch their behavior closely and read the spidery cues they’re giving you rather than assuming they’re feeling what a cute little mammal might be feeling in the same scenario.

I could go on with specifics about certain videos, but I wasn’t planning on writing a huge post and this is already long. Also I’m sure many people would disagree with me about some things I’ve said, and I’m not going to argue about anything. This is just how I feel based on what I’ve seen of online jumping spider content, and it’s why I no longer interact with most of it.

every winter solstice I am consumed with thoughts of Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening by Robert Frost…

Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening BY ROBERT FROST Whose woods these are I think I know. His house is in the village though; He will not see me stopping here To watch his woods fill up with snow. My little horse must think it queer To stop without a farmhouse near Between the woods and frozen lake The darkest evening of the year. He gives his harness bells a shake To ask if there is some mistake. The only other sound’s the sweep Of easy wind and downy flake. The woods are lovely, dark and deep, But I have promises to keep, And miles to go before I sleep, And miles to go before I sleep.ALT
