i kinda don't like those posts that are like "it feels so good to be a hater in private instead of bullying people" because i don't think the only two options for negative opinions are Privacy or Bullying. being a hater in a public forum is perfectly fine, and even the most vitriolic negative opinions are not automatically bullying just because someone who might have their feelings hurt by them sees them. there's a difference between being negatively impacted by something you see and being actually targeted by negativity.

seeing someone drop an absolute dogshit off the mark screed against something you love that is not actually harmful in any real way but nevertheless activates the enrage phase of your boss battle and then learning to either just block them or keep scrolling without it ruining your day is a valuable skill. and i think we've all seen what spaces that demand constant positivity end up like. developing an inconsequential bullshit tolerance is necessary to be a well balanced member of a social species.

Perhaps during interfaith dialogue, we shouldn't refer to people going through the intensive and lengthy and completely unguaranteed process of becoming Jewish as "converting to Judaism." It is easy to misconstrue that phrase as describing a process similar to joining a universalizing religion, and not a closed ethnoreligion. There is already an anthropological phrase for the situation you are looking to describe and it is "tribal initiation." This is not joining a church, a prospective convert goes through tribal initiation rites of passage and often over a year of learning. We rename people and circumcision is mandatory, people do not do it for fun.

For anyone who doesn’t understand the distinction here (between converting and tribal initiation), becoming Jewish because it’s an integral part of who you’ve always felt you were meant to be (we were all there at Sinai) has a lot more in common with transitioning from one gender to another than changing the party on your voting registration

The husband was writing an article on classic video game records, was surprised to find out that holding the Tetris record is a bit of a big deal, and mentions how good his wife is at it.

The guy he’s talking to mentions that the record is 327, way lower than his wifes usual scores of 500-600.

They travel to a tournament, and she goes to do her attempt. Just after she beats 327, and is climbing higher, a judge brings up to the husband that the specific version she’s playing actually has a different record of 545.

She overhears that she needs to beat 500-something, and keeps going, setting the record at 841.

which, they later find out, is her second-best record

There was a decent but ultimately forgettable fantasy novel I read a long time ago that had a single moment that stuck with me.

The protagonist has just won the world famous sword fighting competition in the big, rich capital and is talking to his mentor, and says something about being the best swordsman in the world. The mentor frowns and tells him that no, he isn't. He is the best swordsman out of the people that could afford to show up to this tournament. There could be a mercenary way out in the mountains, patrolling a snow encrusted fort's walls that could kick his ass and there was no way to know until he was already losing to the guy.

I think about that a lot, and how for every apparently dominant competitor, there might be a fucking ronin out there somewhere capable of destroying them.

Not to be repetitive but genuinely sex positivity and sexual liberation only work if everyone realizes that sex isn’t that much of a fucking deal. It is not the be all end all of anything. It isn’t the crux of every coming of age story or the pinnacle of every relationship. It’s literally just a thing some folks do.

Obviously some folks will put significance on their own, personal experiences, or consider it to be like the highest form of intimacy/romance/etc, but also some folks think cooking together is the height of intimacy/romance/connection, some people put that insane amount of significance onto Hollidays or wacky traditions.

Nobody should be pressured to have/not have sex, nobody should be expected to put significant meaning on sex, the only sex folks should be worried about is their own (if they choose to have it) and if someone’s in a legitimate dangerous situation.

TLDR: sex can personally be a big deal for someone, but collectively everyone needs to stop giving a fuck because folks deciding to smoosh booties or deciding not to do that really is not that big a deal and literally doesn’t affect the general population in any meaningful way.
