Tonkla didn't say “girl” at all. He used a Thai pronoun that is usually used by women or when someone is addressing a woman.
Unless he's queer, it's unlikely for a man to call another man เธอ (ter), and that's why Kamin concluded Tonkla was speaking to one of his female friends.
