You mentioned my previous ask was vague, so I’m rephrasing. How does anti-punitivism address extremist ideologies like Nazism while still taking harm seriously? I understand that dehumanization and punitive responses can reinforce harm, and that systemic change is the only way but I still have trouble imagining what meaningful rehabilitation looks like for someone who holds such harmful ideologies, these people seem to far gone

you don’t have to talk so loud

Being against punitive justice doesn’t mean I believe that people should be allowed to do harmful things unchecked, or that I’m against the use of force. If you see a Nazi on the street yelling Nazi shit, stop him. Punching him in the face is an acceptable way to stop him. Notice that this is about stopping an action, not a thought.

If you continue to beat him after he stops, that would be punitive. I think we can all agree that beating a man to death in broad daylight, even for saying reprehensible shit, is not something that can be allowed.

I think the key thing here is “too far gone”. Do you have any examples, experiences, etc that you’re drawing from with that opinion? Willing to be wrong, but I doubt it, I think you’re operating purely on vibes there. Let me give you a real world example:

I was born and raised in the deep south which, because I am white, means that my family, community, etc was (and is) deeply racist. As children, we were calling each other the n word with a hard r as an insult. I really cannot stress enough just how fucking racist the environment I grew up in was, unlearning that has been and will be the work of a lifetime.

My uncle, the poor dumb bastard, had a daughter. She turned out to be a lesbian. Given that my family was also deeply homophobic, this was the first time he received an incentive to interrogate his bigotry. I won’t tell you that he’s not homophobic, but I’ve seen him with a rainbow painted on his face so. Big improvement, yeah?

His daughter fostered and then adopted a little black girl, you see where this is going. She’s his favorite person in the world, I think, and has been since she was a baby. I won’t tell you that he’s not racist, but I’ve seen him drive around on a golf cart with her screaming and laughing in his lap.

I haven’t heard him say a slur in about ten years. I think we can all agree that this is not a perfect feel-good story, but he’s doing better.

There’s a lot more I could tell you to contextualize him, but I’ve told you all of this so I could paint a picture of “a racist” to mirror your question about “a nazi”. Can you see how dehumanization cuts both ways?

You’d have probably thought he was too far gone, if you’d heard him talk 20 years ago. I’ve seen enough to know better.

It’s always about incentives. People change when you give them a reason to. If punishment worked, prisons would be empty. They are full.

Yeah I said something similar yesterday but we can NOT let what happened to Renee Good cloud what happened to everyone else at the hands of these SS Demons!!!

Because we can’t disregard one person if we’re for human rights!

The above screenshot reads:

A Black man was killed by ICE (off duty) in Los Angeles on New Year's Eve. And like Renee Good, he was an American citizen. But most people have not heard about Keith Porter.

I need y'all to realize this. Black people experience this lack of visibility all the time when it comes to being victims.

The second screenshot above reads:

Renee Nicole Good wasn't the first killed by ICE...

Take care. Take care of each other, your community, yourselves.

Travel in groups and make sure your loved ones know where you are. And absolutely know your rights.

And even in troubled times, try to find a spark of hope, creativity and comfort and hold onto it. For even joy is resistance.

at the point of transgenderism where its just getting straight up annoying. like, god, stop applying woman things to me. stop calling me that. stop talking like you still think 3rd grade boys do so-and-so and girls do so-and-so baby rules apply and cooties are real. why do i have to come out? i'm still the same person. this isn't a huge deal to me. i'm just This. i shouldn't have to hold a press conference because it's always such a huge deal. what a hassle. i'm tired

raymoohackery

"are you a boy or a girl are you a trans man are you nonbinary" i'm going to be real with you chief, i have no fucking idea, i just know that whatever shit the broader world says i am isn't true. i'm not a woman. but yes i am. there's kinship. but then other things about so-called womanhood makes my skin crawl. and i love hanging with the lads if they stop seeing me like some frail birdbrained glass thing. because for some reason female-adjacency still evokes othering. i just don't get it. why do any of you give a fuck about what men and what women do and how they act. mind your business. i'm just me. stop seeing me as an alien cuz i got tits and you dont. i'm fed up

As a general rule of fantasy and sci-fi naming, the closer to the back half of the alphabet the average letter in their name is, the eviller they are. A name that doesn't contain any consonants north of R is poison frog colouration. If it uses Y as a vowel in a non-terminal position you're basically fucked.

i dont think you know this and i'm certain you didn't intend this -- and this is a nice funny post -- and you REALLY shouldn't be blamed for not knowing this--

look at some western european words and names and then look at words and names in Every Other Language and get back to me

womanbreast

oh also, in the "good wise high cultured pure elf" direction, opposite the "evil ork demon" names -- lot's of Cs, soft sounds, "ia"s and glides, right?

go look at latin and latinized greek

are we uh. are we seeing a pattern

a brief guide to types of fantasy names

  • I put some syllables together and they sounded nice
  • I put some syllables together and I can't say they sounded nice per se but they do sound vaguely like they come from Arthuriana so close enough
  • reasonably common real-world name but a letter or two is changed or added
  • extremely apt real-world character descriptor but a letter is changed (you know who you are)
  • two reasonably common real-world names smashed together in some kind of fantasy name particle accelerator
  • this means something meaningful in a foreign language (real-world)
  • this means something meaningful in a foreign language (elaborate conlang, self-created)
  • this means something meaningful in a foreign language (hey Siri, how do you say Fateful in Quenya? Set alarm for D&D Session Zero for 45 minutes from now.)
  • real-world names, but exclusively ones that are no longer in common usage, frequently either from the ancient Mediterranean region or else medieval European names
  • "this is Linda and she fights dragons. fuck you."
  • referred to only by a series of complex and mysterious titles
  • rigid naming convention across the board, but within that any one of the above is possible
  • some kind of pun or overly long memeified joke
  • I don't know what data set the fantasy name generator runs off of and I'm too afraid to ask but not too afraid to reap the benefits
  • acronym that I never replaced
  • Literally just a noun
