When you pick up a sword for the first time you will be slow and awkward. This is frustrating, but refuse the temptation to try and become a “faster” fencer. Chasing after speed is like trying to catch smoke. If you try and pursue speed, all you will accomplish is haste. Haste is the enemy of 1st class fencing.
Speed is a lie the untrained mind tells itself when it sees an action it cannot follow. The truth is a combination of timing, control, and fluidity. Fluid motion, even done slowly, will always arrive before a hasty strike. Control will allow you to move without wasteful motion that will slow you down. Timing will eliminate the need to move fast almost entirely. There is no need to get somewhere fast so long as you get there at the right time.

This is true for plenty of other things too!! When you’re learning anything that involves moving your body, don’t forget that quality of movement is more important than speed!

I identify the most with the woman who has a green velvet ribbon around her neck and keeps being like “DONT untie my neck ribbon or something really bad will happen” and then her husband unties the ribbon and her head falls off. this is extremely real to me. spent my whole life like “please don’t do this thing to me or really bad stuff will happen” and everyone around me being like “that sounds fake” and doing it anyway. and then my head fell off!

2. many of you are correcting me, but the version of the story where she instructs her husband to untie the ribbon on her deathbed is just one version of the story, and you’re probably only familiar with that one bc it’s in scary stories to tell in the dark. there’s other versions! many of which involve someone removing the ribbon against her will/while she is asleep/etc

Someone even asked me “why don’t you charge money for it, it took you forever to put the document together” and I said “Not a lot of people have money and if they have some fabric scraps and a couple of buttons lying around they can make themselves a little mouse friend for free and that might make them happy and that makes me happier than receiving money???” Make yourself a liddol creacher! Apparently ICE now has agents posing as utility workers to get into people’s homes. The electric and gas companies have posted information on how to tell if it’s one of their workers, and numbers to call to confirm whether they’ve sent someone to do utility work on your house.
Zhuzhu lives on the other side of the world, in Singapore! Her person first contacted me a few years ago about her deteriorating condition. Here are her first diagnosis photos:
Her person wrote:
I’m writing to get an estimate for a well-loved and threadbare stuffed pig, who is currently more hole than pig. The fabric has been worn so thin that it breaks, and her previous surgeon (my grandmother) said that it would be very difficult to fix because the fabric can’t hold a stitch.
Fortunately, Zhu Zhu did have a bit of protection that was keeping her together at the time:
There were a few options for her care. Spa, patching holes, lining, recovering. It took a couple of years to decide (flying solo halfway around the world is scary!) but eventually Zhuzhu’s person decided to send her to California for a spa and full recover. It was the best bet for Zhuzhu to survive for future generations to love.

There were a few choices for her new skin, and her person opted for French terry like she had originally. It was a really close color match. Her original eyes were going on top of the new fabric, but she would get new nostrils, and she was opting for plumper rather than skinnier, so she could take more hugs. Here’s Zhuzhu just before she got closed up to fly back around the globe:
Look at that happy smile! and her person agreed. Yes! Perfect they wrote.
