The big Nintendo franchises are in such an interesting spot right now cause it's clear that the old guys at the company have had their careers defined by the idea that every console generation is a technological leap that reinvents The Entire Idea Of What A Game Is, but that era of massive tech leaps sort of ended a while ago. So they're stuck trying to make every big flagship game a reinvention at the design level, and that means we're suddenly going 10 years between mainline 3D Mario entries, for example.
