Love how tumblr has its own folk stories. Yeah the God of Arepo we’ve all heard the story and we all still cry about it. Yeah that one about the woman locked up for centuries finally getting free. That one about the witch who would marry anyone who could get her house key from her cat and it’s revealed she IS the cat after the narrator befriends the cat.

The concept of Astrid and Eadwulf calling Essek slurs and lowkey hazing his ass in the lab only for him to get pseudo married to their ex third (that of course they’re still in love with) and live in a little cottage with him and adopt a few cats WHILE said third is actively their coworker at the very school they trauma bonded and fell in love in decades ago. AND THEN he shows up at Astrid’s side gig book store job and embarrasses the shit out of her with his interns, specifically being like “my partner, your ex, says hi. :).” Insane play by Essek Thelyss, king of being petty and never letting go of anything ever.

Mr. Mercer was clearly drawing a lot from classical Greek philosophy for Kryn Dynasty terminology; dunamancy, anamnesis. Typhros though has stumped me. Clearly Greek but I haven't been able to figure out a root... until now.

TYPOS, TYPOSIS. Delineation, Imprinting, Impression. Theophrastus uses this term in discussing perception (Sens. 53); both Epicureans and Stoics also use this term in accounting for perception. InALT

More seriously though, I wonder if it's from (or combined with) the Greek týfos, from the Ancient Greek τῦφος (tûphos), defined below, which also appears in Latin as typhus and from there the disease name "typhus fever":

But it's that mysterious R that prevents the clear match in both cases. I thought I'd be clever and swap a consonant for a near cousin sound (in this case voiceless->voiced for T->D) and found this instead:

I can't be bothered to put in the links just now but according to Wiktionary,

  • In every living Germanic language except English, the word for 'turtle' incorporates 'shield'
  • Many of them are literally 'shield toad'
  • English borrowed from French instead
  • The French word is related to the Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, etc words
  • One might expect these to derive from Classical Latin. One would be wrong.
  • The Classical Latin word does survive in the scientific name and in a second Italian word for turtle.
  • That word (testudo) is built on 'testa' which can mean 'fragment of earthenware' or 'shell or covering'
  • So the Germanic languages are calling it shield-thing and Latin is calling it a shell-thing! Very nice.
  • But, you ask, if not from Classical Latin, where do the Romance Language (and also English) words come from?
  • Medieval Latin 'tortuca'
  • And where did that come from?
  • Wiktionary says the origin is disputed but one of the options given — which Merriam-Webster on my phone seems fine with — is that is was derived from a Late Latin word derived from Tartarus
  • "because it used to be thought that tortoises and turtles came from the underworld and they were commonly paired with such infernal beasts"
  • Excuse me

Ok but tortoises are bad tempered little assholes and I love them. Clive once spent an hour trying to kill my brother from any direction he could ram him while he was lying on the grass. Settled on his throat as the best bet. The fact he is the size of a side plate does not deter his murderous ambition.
