Aang and his mentors — requested by anon

It’s kind of cool that all of Aang’s teachers are completely out of the box. All the Avatars before him would wait until they are older, go around, find the best traditional masters and train with them. But other than airbending, and Gyatso was still the odd cookie among the monks, Aang learns from people who themselves learnt their bending in non-traditional ways. It’s like alternative teaching methods- but they are really perfect for him in their own ways:

- with Katara they learn waterbending together in waves, from Katara’s little self-taught moves, to the stolen scroll, to the North Pole - it’s like the element - push and pull

- Toph is a completely original earthbender, she’s as close as it comes to learn directly from a badgermole, or from a living earthquake. 

- and Zuko, who is by far not the most skilled firebender on the show, he’s still perfect for Aang, because he understands having to overcome mental barriers when it comes to bending.
