I keep seeing this take in the monster high community that g3 is bad because it takes inspiration from modern trends and “microtrends” and this idea that g1 is timeless and apparently did not rely on trendy fashion and microtrends. I just need to say this take is so not the reality of the situation.
I can concede that g3 does take inspiration from modern fashion trends and tiktok trends, but also, the fashion scene moves way quicker than it did 15 years ago. things go in and out of fashion at the drop of a hat while trends were a little slower during the earlier days of the internet. Core refresh 2 draculaura definitely did take inspiration from the bow trends and the coquette trend, and, its fine if she isnt your thing, but g1 did the EXACT same thing. I need the community to look, and I mean really look and think about the g1 dolls heralded as “timeless fashion.” think about their inspiration and think how these clothes would look on a human.
the amount of g1 dolls wearing a pair of printed leggings is already a good sign of this. genuinely, look at most of the dolls in patterned leggings like this and tell me they dont remind you of 2010s galaxy leggings.

look at this abbey. the geometric pattern white leggings, the long shirt, that specific scratchy black sparkle fur material. I can vividly remember these clothes at Justice in 2012. (not to mention that they sold monster high dolls at Justice)
g1 also had entire characters based on 2010s specific trends. opperetta, robecca, venus, isi dawndancer, gigi grant, viperine, Kjersti, hell even Holt looks like a missing 1D member lol. this can easily be confirmed by looking at their concept art inspiration boards, all full of tumblr and Pinterest screenshots. the deer makeup trend, aztec print trend, the “boho chic” trend, the pixel art gamer trend. steampunk and rockabilly had a huge moment in the 2010s that has been unmatched since. a lot of this is nostalgic, and I totally get that (problematic elements of g1 aside), but i think people need to be realistic with these criticisms. you dont have to like modern fashion, that is perfectly ok! but its silly to pretend g1 was not just as trendy a lot of the time too!
im not making this post to force anyone to like g3, that is perfectly ok (as long as it isnt for bigoted reasons) but the nostalgia glasses have completely taken hold of the entire community and I wanted to make a silly post to address this! im not bashing g1, I collect it too! I think its fun to look back on the printed leggings of the past and smile!
