There are a few minor things that change, actually. And yes, I would suggest carrying over from Awakening, as one of the characters from Awakening becomes very important in DA 2.

How is Awakening compared to Origins? One of the things that put me off for DA:2 was the fact that it gives you even less of an ability to create your own character than Origins did, although I don't know how Awakening does it. I have DA:O and DA:2 for Xbox, and DA:O for PC (which I'm playing atm), and I'm thinking of getting Awakenings and Inquisition.

Dunno about catch-up, but the big events in Kirkwall - setting of DA 2 - are summarized in the Keep on the Origin site, which you have to fill out for your decisions to carry over. Just go through the DA 2 events, check the wiki, etc., and decide what you want and don't.

The dragon age keep website, which is what you use to import your saves from previous games, gives a good overview of the story.

Dragon Age 2 in 10 words or less -

ANDERS FUCKS UP EVERYTHING.

My favorite summary is "SJW blows up church with leader inside". XD

I like to think of it more as "Hawke fucks up everything." You either play Hawke as a prick, or you undo all of the good things you did as the Warden.

Things I did as the Warden:
- Negotiated peace between the Templars and the Circle.
- Opened relations between the humans and the Dalish.
- Gave the throne to Prince Bhelen and opened relations with Orzammar.
- Sent Sten back to to the Qunari with positive things to say.
- Killed Flemeth.
- Allied with the Architect to try to prevent the remaining two Blights.

Things I wound up doing as Hawke by not playing him as a total prick:
- Caused a civil war between the Templars and the Circle.
- Caused the death of a Dalish elder and renewed hostility with the Dalish.
- Helped a member of House Harrowmont escape with the promise of a possible civil war between Kal Sharock and Orzammar.
- Killed the leader of the Qunari (yeah, that can only improve our image further).
- Helped resurrect Flemeth.
- Let a dangerous Darkspawn escape into the Deep Roads, no doubt off on his way to start the next Blight.

I freakin' hated that game.

Yup. In DLC, Hawke ends up releasing Corypheus from a Grey Warden Prison.

So that entire latter half of the game and all of the death and destruction that came with it? Happened because of Hawke.

And the way I see it, Orzammar is pretty much screwed with Harrowmont on the throne too. Yes, he's honorable, but he's an honorable adherent to one of the most backwards and self-destructive forms of government in existence. So I took my chances with Bhelen and his more open trade / greater relations with the surface over Harrowmont's slow death from stubborn stagnation.

You don't actually need to play the others to be able to play Inquisition (even though I feel like you should, rofl, but that's just because I'm head over heels in love with those games) as it was made to be able to be an entry title for people who hadn't played the series before.
But, as others have said, the Dragon Age Keep summarizes the games pretty well.

wait, he was physically in inquisition? i don't remember this...then again the beginning of inquisition was pretty bogged down and horrible. once you get skyhaven its better.

Yep! I haven't beaten it yet (I'm trying to get 100% completion, so I'm in the middle of doing literally every sidequest known to man and killing all the dragons) but I think he's actually a pretty big part of the mid/later story, if I remember correctly...because of everything that's going on with the Wardens.
Though that might be only if you didn't put him on the throne with Anora?

Well, it was either her or Alistair and I guess I didn't harden him enough to let me rule with him (unfortunate, but I really hated even being the slightest bit mean to him) so I went the selfish route and had Anora sit on the throne and Alistair and I went off to have Warden adventures. XD

Unpopular opinion: I really actually liked DA II. Do I think it could have been done better? Yeah, absolutely. I think they should have taken longer to work on it, but understand that it was just an attempt at a cash grab for EA and Bioware. It's shitty, but it happens. :/ Although I do think the huge, drastic change of character for Anders between Awakening and DA II was a bit much, even though I do understand why he changed...I just don't like it. :C
And, IMO, Carver and Fenris were annoying and I didn't like Aveline.

i liked 2. mostly because i had no expectations for it. and in terms of combat, i think its the best. as for anders...he was always pretty dull. i did not approve of his choice to blow up the temple. and i had all my followers on my side. also picked fenris...didn't wanna less out, and fuck anders. so really males have better choices because isabella is my first choice. as for avaline, i liked her. carver sucked so i never played a mage. also i made bethany a grey warden. wonder how shes doing.

Check out Dragon Age Keep. It will let you pick the major events and choices so you dont have to redo them and brings you up to speed very well on the events of the last two games.

Could be wrong as it's a long time since I played Inquisition, but I think there was the option to play it taking into account things you did in DA2 or play it ... 'normal'(?) where it assumes you HADN'T played DA2 and kinda explained things a bit. Or am I thinking of Witcher 3? Balls. That might've been W3.

Fuck EA. But Dragon Age Inquisition isn't an EA game, it's a BioWare game. EA just published it. And yeah, I know EA owns BioWare but Activision owns Blizzard. Blizzard makes amazing games, like WoW, Diablo 3, Starcraft, Hearthstone. Activision has made recyclable shit like Call of Duty for a million years. BioWare has made amazing games like Mass Effect and Dragon Age, where EA has made shit games like Battlefield, the latest Sims, the failure that was SimCity 2013, etc.

Look at a game's developer, not so much its publisher before you prejudice '3'

If you start a new game, it basically walks you through step by step, all the major events that happened in all of them and you can pretty much pick exactly which way your past went through all the previous games while also getting a refresher at the same time.

Actually you NEED to have played them or you need to go to the tapestry website to make your own story line for Warden, Commander Warden, and Hawke.

Honestly? If it wasn't for a few choice characters from 2, you could ignore that game completely and still go with the flow for the majority of the game if you played Origins.

I haven't played DA:2 yet (I have them both for Xbox, and Origins for PC; which is the one I'm playing right now) either, and to be honest I'm thinking about skipping that game and going straight to Inquisition. DA:2's character selection is extremely limited, and I heard the gameplay isn't that good compared to Origins.
