Maybe I could try being a little less of a terrible person.

The Limits of the Samsung S5's Water Resistance
General | Posted 10 years agoAs I'm sure some of you already know, the Samsung S5 smartphone is water resistant thanks to seals on its back cover and USB port.
However, as I'm sure you also know, this is not a particularly substantial protection for the phone. But it's better than nothing.
If you own one of these phones, please pay close attention to what I'm about to explain, as I just discovered the limits of this phone's water resist features. Fortunately, as you could probably tell by my "Video Games to Go" journal, I am very skilled with electronics, and was able to quickly and easily repair my prized (and very expensive) phone. So here are the weak points for water intrusion on this otherwise resistant phone.
1> The USB Port.
I have only had one problem with the S5's USB port cover. As long as you make sure the cover is firmly seated into the port, and its mating surfaces are clean, you won't have any. It's a good idea to check the cover and the surfaces inside that it seals to every time you're done charging the phone, then follow the onscreen instruction to firmly seal the port cover before you drop it in your pocket for the day.
2> The Headphone Port.
The headphone port is innately waterproof, and is completely unprotected. The PHONE can't be damaged by water intrusion in the headphone port. However, having conductive water or impurities in the port can confuse the phone into thinking that you inserted headphones. This'll turn on the screen, run down your battery, cut off the speaker, and possibly even burn your screen.
To fix or prevent this, after the phone has been exposed to water, and periodically when you clean your phone, take a piece of paper towel or toilet paper, roll it up tight, and stick it into the headphone port to mop up any water and crud in there. Then connect and remove your headphones once or twice to make sure everything's happy.
3> The Back Cover.
This is the elephant in the S5's living room. I knew as soon as I saw it that the hair-thin rubber gasket in the back cover was going to be this phone's water resistance weak spot, and I was right.
It is extremely easy to knock the phone's back cover off when you drop it. After dropping it, pull off any protective case you're using and reseat the several clips around the border of the phone.
Any time you have the back cover off, make sure the gasket in the back cover is clean and intact, and the mating surface (the smooth perimeter around the battery and card holder) is as clean as you can reasonably get it, then snap the back cover on firmly, following the on-screen guide the phone gives you shortly after powerup and after installing/removing the SD card.
During water exposure, try to limit lateral (along the "flat" plane) movement of the phone relative the water. Pressure can easily get under the back cover and blast through the gasket, causing serious problems for your phone.
Dry the phone thoroughly before removing the back cover again, and be careful - some water may remain between the back cover and the phone body for a while.
After exposure, pay attention to the behavior of your phone. If you get an unexpected SD card removal warning or any other abnormal behavior, remove the back cover as soon as you safely can, being mindful of possible water in there as noted just above. If you find ANY water INSIDE the battery or card carrier area, IMMEDIATELY shut down the phone, remove the battery and all cards installed, dry the phone, battery, cards, and holders as best you can by hand with a towel, and leave the phone in a warm, dry place overnight.

Bonuses are good, right?
General | Posted 11 years agoUgh. So they say.
But when I'm conflicted about my personal finances and where I want to put them, it becomes stressful.
I have been living pretty much paycheck to paycheck for the past year or so, ever since a bicycle crash broke my left elbow and stranded me with a massive medical bill. I had some "extra" money a month according to my budget spreadsheet.
Every penny of that's now going to medical bills.
My upcoming profit sharing bonus through work is therefore a godsend. However, I'm conflicted about what to do with the damn thing.
Sensibility tells me that I should throw a chunk of it at the medical bills, and stash the rest into the bank.
However, I have been gawking over the Microsoft Surface Pro tablet series ever since they came out, and a refurbished first-gen can be had for the "reasonable" sum of $500 for the better model.
My bonus will easily be able to buy that tablet with a hunk leftover. But I feel immensely guilty for that, because I already have several usable computers by this point, including a laptop and an Android tablet.
Should I be sensible?
Or should I cave to my waaaaants?IhatehowthatwordsoundsIshouldn'tevenhavewants
*Edited to remove actual money values for privacy reasons.*
Subsequent edit. I feel like hell for even considering the computer now.
I was involved in a car accident earlier (I'm okay). I could very well need to replace my car.
Needs always trump wants.
My family always tried to tell me to enjoy things like gifts and other unplanned income.
But it'd be wrong to buy expensive wants when I have unfilled needs.
I should revise my "what I want for Christmas" to be "money for a car" instead of "gift cards from Newegg" too. Assuming it's not too late ....

Failure to Success: Video Games To Go
General | Posted 11 years agoWell damnit. I blew it up.
I didn't realize that my Gamecube's battery module had no integrated overcharge protection, and left it plugged in. Fried several cells, basically destroying the pack.
This creates a problem, and puts me at a crossroads as to how to proceed with my portable game console project.
I have three ideas.
Idea 1> Convert the entire project to use SLA (Sealed Lead-Acid) batteries.
Advantages> SLAs are cheap for their power capacity and can be had nearly anywhere. I already own and use several of them, making this option effectively free. They come in impressive capacities.
Disadvantages> SLA batteries are large, heavy, bulky, and subject to air transport restrictions, effectively limiting how "portable" this project is.
*Counterpoint: They're full size home gaming consoles. They're already not the most portable things on Earth to begin with.
Idea 2> Replace or rebuild the Gamecube battery module.
Advantages> The Gamecube pack is relatively inconspicuous. It's clearly and specifically designed for the exact application I'm putting it towards. It offers an admirable runtime per cost, doubling the runtime of my small SLA. It's also small and flat, making it very easy to stage somewhere in my mobile gaming configuration. NiMH batteries have no transit restrictions on them. This kind of battery is very safe.
Disadvantages> Cost. A used battery pack will set me back at least $45, and a complete rebuild to guarantee the best performance from the pack will set me back more like $63.
Idea 3> And now for something completely different. Homemade Li-Ion pack?
Advantages> Novel designs, such as Li-Ion packs, could provide astronomical runtime for the configuration, even bringing the power hungry Gamecube into the 2-hour range, while still being small, light, and easy to pack, carry, and stage into my setup.
Disadvantages> Try explaining to TSA the purpose of that clearly hand built battery pack assembly. Li-Ions are kind of dangerous. I may be an experienced technician, and this certainly isn't the first battery pack I've built, but a fault in my design or construction could destroy my work, my console, the car/truck/house/office I'm in, or even myself. Finally, cost. I would need a custom charger for the array, plus the cost of cells, which could easily push the price of this option into the $100 range.
So what do you guys think? Leave a comment.

[Rant] Of cyclists and headlights
General | Posted 11 years agoOkay, I've had enough of this. I need to get it off my chest.
Why do some drivers refuse to turn off their high beams (brights, full beams, whatever they are in your country) for cyclists? I know this is the case because I've been nearly blinded, only to have the oncoming car dim his lights for another car that was coming behind me after I've nearly passed.
In many jurisdictions, it's law that you have to turn down your lights for oncoming cars. This makes sense. You don't want to blind them.
But it makes even more sense to turn then down for cyclists.
Cars have this luxury of "very powerful headlights" that reliably illuminate the road ahead of you.
Cyclists do not have this. Most bike "headlights" are designed to BE seen by motorists, and provide little to no actual illumination to the cyclist. If it does, it's a paltry 50l "cheap flashlight".
They DEPEND on their night vision far more than a motorist does to be able to see what's going on around them.
Blasting them in the face with your brights renders them pretty much blind, not just for the moment, but also for some time AFTER you've passed.
So please, next time you're driving at night, dim the lights for the cyclists. It's just common courtesy.

[Rant] On broken phones and anxiety
General | Posted 11 years agoAs you probably inferred by the title, my phone is broken.
Strictly speaking, it has been broken for a good few weeks, but now it's really broken.
I was attempting to replace the damaged USB port, as this is not the first time I've done this.
(The phone I activated to replace it has already undergone this surgery)
Then I goofed.
While attempting to remove the bad port, I ripped up the pads that attach the contacts to the circuits in the phone. For those of you who aren't electronics technicians, this is very serious damage.
This leads neatly into the anxiety topic.
I've touched on this in more than one comment, and I figured that if I'm going to soapbox about mental illness, I should do it on my own damn page.
I refuse to say that I have Anxietytm. Anxietytm includes Panic Attacks, which are severe, debilitating events that leave the sufferer sobbing and non-functional.
I do not have these.
I have "problems with anxiety", yes. I get anxious for no proper reason, or disproportionately so for proper reasons. This includes the sensation of having "swallowed a weight" for no discernable reason, or having violent, difficult to control tremors and feeling like the End of the World tm is upon me. But I remain functional. With raw pure will, I can power on. I could remain productive at work, I could continue attempting to repair the damaged phone. Clearly, I am simply a male who needs to learn to control his damn emotions.
But these are not "panic attacks". To call them such is a disgrace to those who suffer real panic attacks, and to say I have Anxiety tm is a disgrace to those who actually suffer from the condition.
If anyone has any suggestions for how I can Be a Mantm and better command my problems with anxiety, please leave comments below. They are appreciated.

Computer Gifts
General | Posted 11 years agoOh jeez.
At this rate, if people keep giving me computers I'm going to have to find a place to store them all. (It's probably because I'm so good at fixing them.)
After extensive repairs, I am now the proud owner of a fully loaded Dell D620 laptop with a cellular modem and enough batteries to run for six hours straight.
This means that I can FA from anywhere! may require SFW mode

Pokemon X/Y Players Rejoice - Game Updated!
General | Posted 12 years agoNintendo has released an update to Pokemon X and Y!
This patch fixes the now notorious Save File Corruption in Lumoise City bug. I'd have to check the data to see what else it patches though.
To download it, connect your 3DS to the Internet and log into E-Shop with your X or Y cartridge loaded into the system (if you bought retail). The system will notify you that you have an update, and you can download it easily by following the prompts.
Have fun, and happy training.

General | Posted 12 years agoMy nice tablet ... which is my primary computer, by the way... is dying. Its performance has tanked lately and is getting irritating.
As a result, I'm going to need to start shopping for a new one here soon.
Do any of my three watchers (heh) have suggestions? I currently own an Acer Iconia A500, and would like to either stay with Android or get an x86 Win8 tab.

Technoramble #1 - On Aging Flat Screens
General | Posted 14 years agoHello, furs.
I'm proud to say that I've been around the block a few times with monitors and TVs, and I even collect the things. (4 CRT TV's, 1 CRT monitor, 2 flat monitors, 1 flat TV that works as a monitor).
Therefore I'm going to offer a few tips and advice on the rapidly growing phenomenon of flat panel LCD displays. From hereon I'll assume you have a monitor, but the same tips apply to TVs since they're all but interchangable anymore.
Please note that this particular advice only applies to CCFL, or "Traditional", flat screens, and not the new LED backlit ones that're coming out. I'll ramble about those later.
CCFL stands for "Cold Cathode Florescent", and refers to the backlight in the monitor. This is basically a slightly modified version of the florescent lamps that everyone's familiar with. In most monitors, this'll be a solitary tube across the top or bottom of the panel, though some larger panels have an array of tubes in the back of the set.
Of course, being a florescent lamp, it has a life span, and WILL eventually burn out (assuming something else doesn't kill your monitor first). And just like any florescent lamp, you can look at it to see about how long it's been running, and how long it probably has left.
Problem: Darkening.
Background: Everyone's seen them. The lamps in the store with the ends blackened. This happens inside your monitor too, though since the tube's hidden inside the guts of the beast, it's not too obvious.
Effect: The right and left extents of your screen will begin darkening.
Age: 100+ hours.
Prospect: Minor darkening is nothing to worry about. Severe, obvious darkening can be a harbinger of things to come.
Problem: Slow warm-up.
Background: This effect's most obvious in some brands of compact florescent "spiral" bulbs, when you hit the switch, and it takes a second for the light to come on. It then takes several minutes to come up to full brightness.
Effect: Your screen is dim when you first turn the monitor on, but after a few minutes it's at full brightness.
Age: Some do this new. Most monitors don't start doing this until they've racked up a lot of hours.
Prospect: If the screen comes right on, but takes a bit to come to brightness, don't worry. If the screen fights to light, start worrying.
Problem: Discoloration.
Background: Very old florescents, those on the verge of burning out, begin changing colors as the phosphors on the inside of the tube begin running out, or the gases inside are beginning to expire. I hope you never see this.
Effect: Color impurity in the screen. Whites appearing pink is a common one I've seen.
Age: Very old!
Prospect: Your monitor doesn't have long left.
What can you do?
Really, the best thing you can do to prolong the life of the backlight is to set Brightness to a comfortable mid-range setting, set a fair Sleep setting in your PC if applicable, and avoid frequent on-offs of the screen. That last one can run down your backlight in a hurry.
