With the holidays coming up you will see (as I am sure many of you have seen now) an increase of Sugar Gliders in the malls near you. (Note: They are called "Sugar Bears" in the mall, but do not be deceived).
These adorable little furry angels will capture your heart INSTANTLY, and you WILL be tempted to take them home! This is what the people selling them WANT. But think BEFORE you buy! These "Sugar Bear specialists" will come to your mall, stay just longer enough to sell your babies to you, then pack up and leave.
What do they leave behind? Customers with lighter wallets and sugar gliders that are sick and dying. I have seen this first hand, all too often. I have worked with a vet, and at this vet we KNEW when this company came into town because not long after they leave we get a huge rush of sick and dying sugar gliders. It's sad to see.
Sugar gliders that were just beyond sick with clear signs that they were mistreated LONG before they got to their new home
People who were told by the company you could introduce them to your other pets ONLY to find out the other pets attack and/or kill them.
Sugar gliders (usually two) being stuck in a cage that is WAY too small for 1.
People not being told the proper way to care for them so have no clue what they're doing.
Sugar Gliders MAY BE CUTE but they are a LOT of work! These people tell you they are easy and take NO work! These people would be what we in the real world call "wrong". Sugar gliders, just like ANY OTHER PET should NEVER be an impulse buy! And think about how much money you're willing to shell out for an animal you know NOTHING about from a company that will be GONE IN A FEW DAYS! 1 Glider with WAY TOO SMALL cage and heat rock which is just BAD for the glider, and some food is over $500! If you want a second glider it's over $800!
Is their love and affection worth it? YES....BUT you can find them cheaper.
Please listen to this word of advice, my animal enthusiasts:
If you see these guys in your mall and want to buy them then STOP! Do not do it! If you see them and REALLY want a glider then GO HOME! Do your RESEARCH! Research the company selling them, and most of all RESEARCH THE SPECIES! Research EVERYTHING that goes into caring for them, them think on it a day or two. By then the people in the mall WILL BE GONE. If you STILL want gliders then you can find a reputable breeder or a glider rescue. You will find gliders for a much better price, that will be healthier and happier.
I speak from experience. I know SEVERAL people who were lured in by this company and I found out far too late to stop them. I've also known someone who had the misfortune to work for them and the horror stories told to me by this friend were horrendous! This friend is long gone from that company and couldn't be happier!
My gliders were rescues. A beautiful bonded pair and 2 joeys that we paid $100 for and couldn't be happier. They are sweet and lovable additions to our home.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE remember buyer beware!
DO NOT TRUST THE PEOPLE IN THE MALLS
DO NOT BUY THEM ON IMPULSE
DO YOUR RESEARCH
