“Can I get a Commission with You?” (G)
Hi. I get this question a lot, so I wanted to write my thoughts on it and maybe save myself (or you!) a bit of time in explaining. In going to someone to ask for a commission, there are a few things you should really have:
1. An existing relationship with me or a good approach
2. A character I enjoy
3. A specific idea in mind, as well as generalized themes to improvise
4. An idea of what artist you’d want to commission and their process
5. Patience
To explain these, I’m going to walk through an example. Let’s say you message me this:
“Hey KC, I want to get a commission with Clarisse sometime. Are you interested?”
This is a bad approach that wouldn’t really interest me because it doesn’t say much of anything. Let’s go through the steps to demonstrate how we can make it more compelling.
An existing relationship with me or a good approach
In asking me to get a commission with you, you’re asking for my blessing and possibly an investment in having a piece of art created. Art is a means of conveying ideas, themes, thoughts, and emotions, and while those are sometimes pornographic they’re also deeply personal and hard to remove from the internet. For that reason, commissions should really try to mean something.
If you’re someone I know, the commission can be representative of feelings and interactions we’ve expressed before. If you’re not someone I know, you need to make a case for what the commission would express and why I care. The most common mistake I see in these requests is that someone comes into my DMs, indicates nothing but their own desires, and then asks what I think. As the rest of this guide will explain, your mission should be to convince me that I want to get a commission with you.
A good explainer for how to think about this is Simon Sinek’s Start With Why TED Talk, which he explains how to be inspiring and convincing in the way you speak. The tl;dr is that I’m not interested in what (I want a commission), I’m interested in why (thoughts/ideas/emotions/etc.).
Going back to our idea, we realize that we need to convey some more information about why we’re even here. So our message gets a bit longer:
“Hey KC, I saw some of your art with Clarisse and I really like her background as a tailor, so I thought you might want to show more of that off by getting art of her taking my OC’s measurements. Would you want to split something of her and my OC Billybob?”
A character I enjoy
If we’re commissioning pornography together, then obviously the visuals of what’s happening are going to be the focus. To that end, you should be coming into the conversation with a generalized idea of what I like. “But KC, how am I supposed to know what YOU like without asking you?”, I hear you say. Well reader, as it turns out this very website has nine whole years of commissions I’ve posted with 714 total uploads that you can reference. These are organized into dedicated folders for each character so you can see how I might approach them differently, and those folders link to refsheet.net pages which have detailed backstory for each one that articulates their personalities. There’s also a journal with links to F-List pages that will provide even more helpful material.
In the age of social media, people regularly communicate their preferences online through what they post, share, and like; I am no different. In approaching me for a commission, a vital step in that process is doing background research to help ground your suggestions in what would interest me rather than shooting in the dark.
“Hey KC, I saw some of your art with Clarisse and I really like her background as a tailor, so I thought you might want to show more of that off by getting art of her taking my OC’s measurements. Based on this pic of her with a strap-on I thought you might be interested in my fat-assed femboy Billybob, who likes to be teasy but can be fucked into submission.”
A specific idea in mind, as well as generalized themes to improvise
Segueing off the last point, bringing a specific idea to the table is important as it indicates to me that you’re actually familiar with me, my interests, and my characters, rather than just going “unga bunga” at my big butt. If all you have is a desire to ogle my ass cheeks, the gallery is open for browsing.
The key here is that I’m overwhelmingly disinterested in playing a game of 20 questions to hammer out a commission idea. I am a working professional (hard to believe, I know!) who also engages in hobbies and exercise, so I am somewhat choosey about my time. This means that the ideation should be a natural, casual discussion based on a proposal you offer that also has some wiggle room for me to be adjusted to my taste.
PAUSE. Since we’re talking about commission ideas, let me talk about those in more detail. Many of the ideas that are presented to be are lacking in one key area: Personality. They are chiefly expressive of sex and only describe positions but fail to articulate anything about the characters or commissioners they represent. One of the elements that I believe is key to the things I commission (at least now that I’m in my late 20s rather than when I was 19) is that every piece should convey a human concept or emotion. Let me look at a good example vs. a bad example:
X – KC wearing a bra over his ass and showing off
✓ - KC wearing a bra over his ass and peering over his shoulder, with a smirk on his face. He’s recording a cam show and saying something like “Really Chat? This is what you paid $500 to see? You guys are such freaks!”
The second version adds in more prescriptive details that accentuate KC’s bratty, playful, and voyeuristic personality, rather than just posting big cheeks.
So, going back to our running message, we should update it with something like:
“Hey KC, I saw some of your art with Clarisse and I really like her background as a tailor, so I thought you might want to show more of that off by getting art of her taking my OC’s measurements. Based on this pic of her with a strap-on I thought you might be interested in my fat-assed femboy Billybob, who likes to be teasy but can be fucked into submission. I was thinking about a two-panel picture of him being cock and then instantly submitting by being pegged, maybe with her fingers in his mouth.”
An idea of what artist you’d want to commission and their process
The actual process of getting a commission can be a cumbersome one, so if you’re approaching me to ask for an idea, you should have an idea of who you would commission, what it costs, and the process. Picking an artist is a difficult task of finding someone whose style and sensibilities match the given concept, while also understanding their pricing, workflow, and timing. I’ve commissioned many artists so I know the pitfalls of getting buried in a queue, art not turning out as you hoped, and dealing with difficult people. Which is to say, if you have no idea of who you would commission for the proposed piece, you should expect to hit an immense roadblock.
As an aside: Do not suggest you want art from Carmessi. Yes, he does a lot of art for me and will continue to do more. We have a long-standing friendship that is publicly expressed through art. However, Carm does have a commission queue he’s been working through for multiple years, and I do not have an interest in abusing my privilege with him to ask for endless art. I mention this because I get this comment a lot, and it reeks of “Well I just want art from Carm and KC is the easy way in.” I assure you; I am not.
When approaching it would be ideal if you had some suggested artists that you would want to buy from, and at best have your own working relationships with them. This gives me a clear understanding of the time and financial commitments that will be associated with the artwork, which some people underestimate. So now our message can be finalized, and it look like this:
“Hey KC, I saw some of your art with Clarisse and I really like her background as a tailor, so I thought you might want to show more of that off by getting art of her taking my OC’s measurements. Based on this pic of her with a strap-on I thought you might be interested in my fat-assed femboy Billybob, who likes to be teasy but can be fucked into submission. I was thinking about a two-panel picture of him being cock and then instantly submitting by being pegged, maybe with her fingers in his mouth.
My friend Sarah is opening for commissions soon. She does two-panel pics for $300, so it’d be $150 each. Here are some examples of her work in case you’re interested: [LINK]”
Patience
Let me reiterate two points I’ve already made in this journal: I am a busy person, and I get these requests a lot (particularly after I upload something). To that end, you can’t reasonably expect me to be able to drop money on a commission at a moment’s notice, or to have an immediate art hookup that you can cash in on. Getting the commission may involve waiting for an artist to open or waiting for me to have the money for it. If these aren’t things you’re able to do, I would advise asking to split with someone else.
This step won’t change our running message but will inform the proceeding steps and is just generally good practice.
Conclusion
I commission art for fun; it’s a hobby and a means of expressing myself. The pictures are representative of my personality (and fetishes) in a way that helps visualize an idealized self who I aspire to. I appreciate that people enjoy looking at what I do and want to participate, but doing so requires looking slightly beyond the pornographic content on screen and understanding some of the intention behind it. It also requires conveying your own self and personality in a way that helps me relate to you and want to share something a custom piece of artwork.
I hope this explainer helped demonstrate how we went from:
“Hey KC, I want to get a commission with Clarisse sometime. Are you interested?”
To a much better, actionable idea that conveys specifically what you want and why it might be appealing to the person you’re trying to convince (me):
“Hey KC, I saw some of your art with Clarisse and I really like her background as a tailor, so I thought you might want to show more of that off by getting art of her taking my OC’s measurements. Based on this pic of her with a strap-on I thought you might be interested in my fat-assed femboy Billybob, who likes to be teasy but can be fucked into submission. This journal is not a means of opening the floodgates for people to send proposals, but more of a resource that I can reference back to as I get inquiries.
