Bikemorph L O R E (G)
Posting this here mostly to catalog it but public if anyone's interested in my Bikemorph/motomorphs. This was just me yapping to a friend my headcanon for worldbuilding bikemorphs so its not very well construed pls ignore
universe is the same, potentially furries instead of humans, until the korean war as the point of divergence - the big change being china invades taiwan in 1950 which was a very real threat at the time, and back then the western world was still pretty "eehh" about defending taiwan
fast forward to the 1980s - Japan takes taiwan's place in building up a massive semiconductor industry that essentially has a complete monopoly
there's some changes to the development of japan's postwar government (i can't point to specifics since idk enough about the timeline) that result in the zaibatsu and its cultural influence being even stronger than it is irl
a much weaker government that is essentially just a front for the zaibatsu' private interests leads to a lot of class divide and general social unrest and the capital isn't too far from night city in cyberpunk
the yakuza consolidate much more power in light of the weaker government and general instability, extorting lower class slums and engaging in gang warfare for drug trade
with japan's population still struggling to recover from ww2 and the general instability, the population size just can't keep up with the zaibatsu' massive workforce demand, so huge investments are made in robotics much earlier and in larger quantities even than irl (japan adopted automation with their auto industry much faster than anyone else, but in this its basically for everything)
(oh also fyi if you aren't familiar with zaibatsu, its referring to the aristocracy-megacompanies that have been around since the start of japan's industrialization - kawasaki, mitsubishi, etc)
so with this monopoly on semiconductors and huge r&d in robotics, the desperate need of law enforcement in the slums of tokyo and such results in a push for bipedal drones (chappie basically) who aren't bound by the need for long-distance transit systems or speed since the yakuza do most of their transit by car
kawasaki heavy industries develops an automaton police unit somewhat larger than a human that 'skates' on powered wheels driven by fluid coupling to a sportbike engine given its compactness and lightweight w/ high speed potential
they develop it privately to be used in their own company-run 'sectors' of the city
the other zaibatsu essentially copy this move for their own areas of control, suppressing the yakuza to earn favor with the government while also using them as gendarmerie for their own interests
they don't look much like bikes at all at first, but eventually they're pitched as walking 'billboards' for their products
it starts with motorsports, with bikemorphs heavily based from those initial law enforcement automatons being made to look like their actual motorcycle products, then competing in races
servos get faster, robotics precision and 'fluidity' skyrockets given the agility needed for both the police operations and worldwide racing
programming just can't quite keep up with just how 'fluid' their movements to be, so to take full advantage, the first digital consciousness-copying experiments bear fruit by the 2000s
(oh and btw this whole time the police units are also being developed for military export, and they know countries would be much more inclined to buy them if they're a "trustable" human-derived AI vs. a programmed machine)
not much longer and the bikemorphs/police/military bots are walking around with human intelligence, though not without shady manipulation controls installed by the zaibatsu ofc
