A One Book Dog (G)
My hair was pushed back. I had been working hard at the library - hardly any time to even stretch my wings. It had been a while, and a librarian appeared to have taken notice.
"You look like you need a break," the librarian smiled, "if you want to stretch your wings, I will tell you a short story. It won't stop your work for long, but it may give you a slight release."
I lifted my wings, they were a bit cramped, "Okay."
"I have been a librarian for a while. I've seen a lot of people come and go," he started, "but one case stands out in my mind."
A story about a library? That was different, but at least it would take my mind off of work.
"A pup came into the library one day. He was young, but you could just see in his eyes that there was something more. He had me help him find a book, and he quickly checked it out. He came in frequently, and seemed to enjoy the library. He talked of how it was a change for him, but it was a good place. Yet that pup would always check out the same book. I tried to introduce him to a number of them, topics far and wide. Books on acting, games I knew a bit about, memoirs, and even offered some books through interlibrary loan. Yet he kept going back to the same book," the librarian paused a moment, as if adjusting his feathers.
"Was it a common book for people to check out," I asked.
"Yes, it was. A number of people seem to like it. Yet I knew the pup had more interests. I helped him get a spot on one of the library's committees, hoping he would find more books to interest him. But still, the same book," the librarians eyes seemed far off, as if recalling a very different time, "Eventually the pup decided libraries weren't for him. He insisted on leaving the library, sometimes even stating that the library only offered one kind of book. If he was looking for books without pages, then maybe he was right, but on categories the library couldn't be out matched. He even left before a whole new wing could be opened on the library, and a shiny statue found its way out front."
"That's kind of sad," I replied, not really knowing what you say to a librarian's random story.
"It is what it is," the librarian replied, "another pup, interests quite alined to his own came by once. It is a library though. A lot of people stop by. Sometimes they read different books, sometimes they read the same one. A library has a lot of storys. Well, I suppose I should let you get back to your work. Study well."
"Thanks," and with that, it was back to my books.
