The Ka'rhen



Zach belongs to a species of fire spirit-like creatures that take on a physical fleshy form through a sort of metamorphosis. In his unstable energy state he is nothing more than a large collection of fiery energy that can be dispersed and concentrated at will. Once the Ka'rhen collects itself together completely it's able to go through a metamorphosis phase and take whatever form they please. Zach himself had decided to base most of his looks on the black-backed jackal yet this image of himself was corrupted by his interest in the occult specifically demons. The metamorphosis process can take from as short as a couple of minutes to as long as several weeks depending on the size, scale, and complexity of whatever form they're taking on. Simple feature changes like color and small changes to specific parts like eyes or ears take the least amount of time while things like full skeletal and internal changes take the longest.



The Ka'rhen have a very long lifespan lasting as long as 300-400 years. However they can cannibalize their own kin to extend their own lifespan in an emergency. The time added varying depending on the size and quality of the victim's "heart fire". The heart is the core of the Ka'rhen and is a capsule for all of their heart fire. Heart fire is a special mass of energy that grants the Ka'rhen everything that's unique about them. From their enhanced lifespan to their ability to take on and change their physical form. With a high enough quality it even gives the individual Ka'rhen enhanced abilities in their physical form.



When their physical form is damaged and destroyed the Ka'rhen will not not die immediately. Instead their form becomes highly unstable and collapses back into their energy state. They're hit by rebound varying in how powerful their physical form was and are forced to scatter their flames to flee their opponent. If their fire heart is destroyed then they themselves are destroyed and any Ka'rhen will do its best to hide it from their enemies. Once their flames have been scattered they will be unable to restart their metamorphosis until they collect the surviving energy back together. 



In the wide scale of the world these creatures can be considered a rarity. Their reproductive rates outside their own species are extremely slim while the reproductive rates within their own species are still slim, but much greater than the former. That isn't to say it's impossible for a non-Ka'rhen to sire the child of a Ka'rhen as the chances are increased depending on how virile either the energy creature or their partner is. When two Ka'rhen bear a child the child is guaranteed to be a Ka'rhen as well. When a non-Ka'rhen bears the child of one the chance of it also being a Ka'rhen is about 40%. The gender of a Ka'rhen is never constant. Some may prefer one over the other but they are entirely capable of becoming whatever gender they wish and forming whatever combination of reproductive organs at a whim. Thus in the Ka'rhen's culture there are no stigmas on gender. Everything is based on the quality and quantity of heart fire one possess.



Life with the Ka'rhen is simple. The stronger your heart was the higher your position in society was. The lowest, and weakest, of Ka'rhen are nothing more than peasants living off meager funds and rough environments. The stronger Ka'rhen became warriors and mercenaries. Any that could hunt and survive in the wilds were treated with respect and thus given a higher position in their society. Past the commoners were the Nobles. These were Ka'rhen that contained the highest quality of hearts. Their heart fire was so pure its rumored that their 'blood' flows directly from the ancestors themselves. Truly a noble family! Thus they are treated with the highest respect whether they deserved it or not. Even staring at a noble for too long could be cause for them to strike you down in the streets. While it is entirely possible for the lowest of the low to grow in strength into a mighty mercenary hero. It is impossible for a commoner to ever bring their heart flames to the same level of quality as the nobles and their ancient blood no matter how much time they had. Even if they were immortal.
