A beloved family pet (who looks rather intimidating), Ole' Red is a mixed breed hound who loves playing in the ocean and protecting his back yard from intruders. His owners love him dearly and asked to have him immortalized. :)

I agree. The shine is on all the right places, showing a good grasp of anatomy. I like the eyes, too.
This one fooled me in the thumbnail! For a second I thought, someone posted a dog photo, but before I looked to see who it was, I thought better of it-- nah, I bet it's Art From the Heart getting good at dog portraits.
Looks like such a nice dog. A lot of personality shows through this picture.

yes, the eyes are rather neat as well, they have a good range of shades and also do well to grab the viewers gaze.
i'm usually pretty good at telling paintings from pictures, but i do occasionally get caught out with cara. it seems almost every picture she posts seems to trick someone. but i do like that she gets that bit of personality as well, which seems to make it seem more than just a painted version of a typical portrait photo. it must be especially nice for owners to be able to see their pets personality as well as their image when they look at the picture.
i have some lovely mini portraits from cara on gourds, but i do hope one day to build enough of an idea and the funds to get a larger picture of my cat, though it'll probably be somewhat landscape-ish as well.

Absolutely. I think painting is for doing something a photograph can't do.
She would be great at a landscape featuring a cat, if her previous works are any indication!

*bear hugs* Thank you Modgey, you made my day. Sometimes I have a hard time seeing the full impact of what I've painted (after hours and hours of staring at it) so reading your comments help be gauge the end result. ;) I'm wanting to get into more landscapes so fancy you mention landscape with a kitty. I have some plans to create some of those. :D
:) Why thank you! Once you get the process of painting fur it's actually pretty easy (just very time consuming). Ole' Red here started nearly solid dark brown. Take a slightly lighter color than your base and paint lines in the direction of the fur. Get an even lighter color and repeat on the same spot and hairs you just painted. Then a lighter color and repeat until you're at the correct color. What's in shadow, leave the darker shades. What's lighter, paint lines in those spots. It's easier for me to start dark and work lighter, that way I'm not painting dark over light later (which as I found out, looks pretty bad. When you paint light over dark it creates transparency over the dark areas to make deep layering effects.) I end up painting each hair atleast 6-8 times depending on the lightness and colors I need. Takes time but when you get in the groove you can paint it pretty quickly. I painted Ole' Red in 26 hrs.
