A clockwork hummingbird, one of what will be many. I love this piece.

When I saw this browsing, I had to come take a closer look, then I saw that it was you. "Vantid! Well why didn't I see this in my watch list?" I wonder to myself, sure I have you watched. But then I go to your user pages only to find that I haven't! Travesty! Well, I have fixed it now. You are watched.
I wonder, who winds the hummingbirds, and how frequently do they need to do so?
Gorgeous piece.

I really don't get it. XD I mean, how can you get something so smooth and bright colors just with colored pencils? I bet you have some magical paper then. D: Anyways, the details are just amazing. When I first took a look, I saw just the bird, but then there were those little mechanical things as well. Interesting combination, it actually works very well! :3
I love the whole steampunk/clockwork animal crossover idea. This may be a bit morbid, so I'm warning you. It reminds me of Lisa Black's taxidermy work or Mike Libby's clockwork insects.
Thank you! I created the background using Prismacolor Art Stix. I knew ahead of time that I wanted a painterly background, textured and rich in color. To simulate the look of paint, I laid down thick strokes of color using the edge of the Stix. The pigments built up until I could barely lay down more colors. At that point I took a rag, wet it a bit with Turpenoid (odorless Tturpentine) and smeared the colors around. I also used a large, stiff brush to push it around and give the piece brushstokes. I repeated the process, using some colored pencil colors that aren't available as Stix in some areas, until I was satisfied with the look. Aaaand that's how I did it!
Wow... this is amazing... you are an absolute GOD with coloring pencils!!! *bows down to you* I was a bit surprised to see your name come up in my watch list (... 45 submissions to look through, LOL), but this is AWESOME! You well deserve to be watched. And to add to the general consensus, I _love_ the mechanical parts. :-D
Youre welcome =). I've realized that though there are several artists whose work I adore, I rarely say anything... and I really should comment more ^.^
I haven't used Prismacolor artstix - from the google image search they appear to be a cross between colored pencils and pastels.... is it like the lead in the prismacolor pencils but in a different shape? If so that would be an interesting medium...
And using turpenoid with colored pencils sounds really interesting as well - I've never done that - I've got turpenoid, maybe I should experiment some with that...

The ArtStix are pastel shaped, but they are the lead inside wooded pencils. They are fun. Chunky, a little unwieldy, and fun! Great for covering large areas and making that gritty rubbed paper texture.
Turpenoid is great, I use it to paint with the pencils. Try it out! It takes some getting used to but its been well worth it in my experience. :>

Lovely image, im probably a little biased because I love clockwork orientated critters (my character is one) ;D, but the detail alone is stunning!. It reminds me of a taxidermy artist a friend recently pointed me to who does this exact thing, placing clockworks and gears in visible places on birds and Insects I wish I could remember her name >.O.
