Another song I felt I should post here for those who didn't follow me over from my old account.
This was one of those that took me god damned forever to write. It was at least a month before I finished it, if I remember. Surprisingly, even though I have only three songs done for the next album, this one already has lyrics and vocal melodies written, and lyrics are usually the last thing I do.
Vicious bass melodies are apparently my specialty, because holy fucking shit, this song is a god damned bitch to play on the bass. It wasn't until recently that I could actually play it without a pick.
I had some help with the breakdown from

Hello...Mister Commentator
if you can make me a favor
put me a song
that doesnt talk of love
i want that woman to know
that her goodbye hurted me
that gave me a big pain
I loved her to die
i adored her as nobody
but there was not money
and she went behind success
that the metal produces
and Mr. commentator
that makes me cry
Well, the thing I'm working on right now with the working title, "Elevations", is kind of my homage to Dream Theater's epics, Six Degrees, ACOS and so on. It's just shy of 15 minutes long at this point and it's not even half finished yet. lol It's the story of the Inuit gods Annigan (the moon) and Malina (the sun). Writing is on hold for the moment though, because I broke a string on my bass and I'm waiting for a new set to come in the mail. lol
Sounds awesome, I enjoy music with a story behind it! I love prog-metal and am rather partial to a bit of Dream Theater so I hope to hear that in it's entirety at some point as well :) Do you write all this for a band then or a solo project? Ah the wonders of string breaking. They're not cheap for basses either, I can't actually remember the last time I changed the strings on mine haha Thanks for the faves by the way
I wish I were in a band. lol I have a tendency to go for wild time signatures and constant changes, so all of the metal bands around here tend to shy away from me because they're all 4/4 all the time. Hell, the intro of Elevations jumps back and forth between 15/8, 17/8, and 9/4. And that's probably the most basic part of the song. lol Actually...looking through the sheet music just now, until the 9 minute mark, the signature changes almost every bar. O.o But none of it is wanky, so it's all good! lol
So, yeah, it's all solo project stuff. ;P
Fortunately, I found a decent sale on some Ernie Ball medium gauge 5 string sets, and they should be in sometime between tomorrow and next Tuesday. ;)

I love fiddling around with signatures, it's just fun. Keep an eye out, or post some ads online the prog-metal bands are out there :P Do you write your music through score and then play it or vice-versa, play it then jot it down?
Haha, just hearing you say that makes me want to hear it more :P
I am fairly lucky to have a single, tiny guitar shop 5 minutes drive away from my house in a small town so I just pick stuff up there if I am in dire need, otherwise I order online. 5 stringer eh? What is it?

I always play it then write it down. I've tried writing it then playing it, but my mental ear is apparently tone deaf, because what I write never sounds like what I want it to sound like. lol
My favourite thing to do with weird time signatures is to take one that's really weird, like a 17/16 or a 13/8 and make it feel like a normal time signature. Like, give it such a groove that flows so well that the listener can't even tell that there's something really weird going on until they try to headbang to it. ;P
I have a guitar shop down the way from me, but while it's only 10 minutes by car, it's over an hour on my bike because there are a lot of huge bridges and, like 3 highways to cross. Also strings there are stupidly expensive, so I shop there only when I have money to waste.
My main instruments are by 5 string bass and 7 string guitar -
My 5 string is a black Rogue LX205 Series II - http://www.musiciansfriend.com/bass.....ng-bass-guitar
I have a red Washburn WG587 http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/revi.....587/index.html
And then the rest of my collection is two Dean Baby Z's, a Centaura CT21, a Cort X-1, two Fender Squier's (one is for-parts), a Yamaha 4 string bass, a no-name 4 string which is either for-parts or a fix-it-up if I ever get the parts together, and three acoustics which are all no-names. lol
I also have a Yamaha something-or-other keyboard and a violin in desperate need of a new bridge. lol

I tend to write in a similar fashion, just never write anything down haha. I tried writing stuff using Sibelius but never sounded natural when I tried playing it. I don't write because I am far too lazy to tab things out.
That's generally the best kind and certainly the most enjoyable to listen to in my opinion and it just appeals more to people who like music as well rather than just the techy-minded shreddy types.
I generally prefer 7 stringers as well, more range without going stupidly low. I have a few guitars too as well as a couple of MIDI keyboards.
What do you use for your tone?

Have you tried using Guitar Pro? The Real Sound Engine is fantastic for guitars and bass (drums, not so much). I can't really stand the sound of MIDI, but with the RSE, tabbing things out is much more tolerable. lol
Seriously, when I got the Washburn, I was so confused and had no idea what to do with that extra string. Now I pick up my 6 strings and I'm confused because I keep reaching for my low B. lol
My tone is from my Zoom G1XNext multi-effect pedal. I actually have two tones for my rhythm guitars that I built pretty much from the ground up and quad track everything, so I actually have both tones on both sides, but the top guitar, which has more crunch, is panned to 75 and the bottom guitar, which has more bass, goes all the way to 100. So I get to record every part of the song 4 times over! lol My lead is kind of a mixture of the two rhythm tones but with a lot more of both treble and bass and I always use the neck pickup unless I'm using the wah. For some reason the wah just doesn't work as well with the neck pickup. :/ I do also have a 20 year old Dunlop wah, but I rarely have another power cord for that, let alone another guitar cable, so I generally have to stick to the wah on my Zoom.
While the mixture of tones sounds pretty decent by themselves, I also do a shit-ton of mixing in Acid Pro with various compressors, EQs and things like GMulti (which I think every recording musician should use because it gives everything so much space to breathe).
I also run my bass through the same pedal, but most of its tone comes from the mixing, since it's a guitar pedal and I can't get all of the nifty sounds I'd like for the bass. ;P

I have it yeah, but don't ever use it. I just don't enjoy tabbing things out and can never be bothered and just get bored after about 5 minutes.
I have been playing a 7 string for almost as long as I've been playing and use both 6 and 7s regularly haha, I love how teeny-tiny a 6 string neck feels after playing a 7.
I do something similar, I record 3 guitars a side, though I cheat a bit as I have the main rhythm tone recording on two tracks at once and have EQ'd the sound and panning on one of the tracks ever so slightly in a template that I use. Love nice thick guitar rhythm tones haha. I used to use a Zoom pedal for my old recordings, but never got it sounding even remotely good as my recording gear was crap (i.e. none at all) and I was using a computer where latency was a nightmare so I had to be really strategic with my playing and stuff always ended up sounding off in places.
I try and dial my tone and EQ into my gear before recording generally and I use Cubase 5 for actually getting things down.

I had a problem with latency on my last laptop. What I ended up doing was using a splitter out of the pedal going to one set of headphones and another set of headphones from my laptop on top of the first pair so I could hear the background instruments. lol It cut down the quality a bit, but I got a new laptop before I did the final cuts of my last album. It's still not released, though, because I have yet to find somewhere to record the vocals. I have paper thin walls in my apartment, so the entire building would probably hear me if I recorded here. lol
I've never been able to do the whole mic and amp thing. I always have a lot of background fuzz. So, I just go right into the input on the laptop. I think it makes for a spectacularly clean sound, unless the guitar and cables are crap. ;P Other than the few pedals, I don't have any gear outside of my laptop and the instruments themselves.
What kind of Zoom were you using? I have an old one that I was using for my second album that I've been thinking of pulling out for some different sounds. The old 505. lol It's ancient, but there are still some fun tones you can make. ;P

I upgraded everything around Christmas time, so I had a decent laptop at that point rather than my ancient desktop and I use an M-Audio sound card now to input everything. I can't sing to save my life, or even growl and I haven't ever written lyrics, I would love to be able to sing but I doubt it will ever happen haha.
I enjoy recording amped guitars but don't have anywhere to do it properly so just stick to direct line-ins.
I was using a Zoom G2 pedal for my sounds (so up until the two latest songs I've posted). I have (though never used for recording) a Zoom GT 9.2tt. I use an Axe-Fx ultra for recording and alongside some rack-mounted bits and bobs for gigs nowadays though.
I used to have Zoom G8 years ago (I think it was a G8? Big green metal thing) That was a nice bit of kit that XD

Sorry for the late reply. My bass strings came in a day early and I had to break them in with a lot of Rush and Dream Theater. lol
I make sure to get laptops with the full Realtek sound card. The latency issues come from not having a full sound card, just a small sound chip, or so I've come to understand.
I thought about getting a new pedal around Christmas last year, but then I realized that there's still a ton of untapped potential in my current pedal. I mean, if I can replicate Gilmour's tone, what else can I do with it, right? ;P

Ah sweet, good times!
Yep, don't have any latency issues any more, so it's much, much easier to record as I can actually record alongside something I have already recorded whereas before I would have to record something, mute it and record it with the latency and then move the recording. Such a pain.
This is it, if it works, why replace it? Sounds decent from what I've heard so fair play!

Man, I'm having war flashbacks to all of the latency problems I used to have. lol So glad I don't have to deal with that anymore. I mean, I still have a bit of an issue with it, but it's not even noticeable when I'm playing, so moving the freshly recorded track a few ticks over is no skin off my back. As long as I don't have to go back to the splitter and second set of headphones, I am always happy. lol
Hells yeah, it's decent! lol I mean, for only $40, I think it's the best musical investment I ever made! ;P Also awesome is that I got it when I was in Australia, and everything is a hell of a lot more expensive there than over here in the States. As soon as I can find another one of my cables, I'm actually super excited to see what kind of sounds I can get from mixing the G1XNext and the 505. The 505 has a limiter, which makes for some really nice leads, but you can't mix it with the compression, and the G1XN has great compression but no limiter, so I think I could probably get something really cool out of it. ;P

I have no problem with it at all now thankfully, decently powered laptop and soundcard saw to that so that's good for me. It's nice recording along to the parts you've already laid down in my view so I am just happy for that!
Yeah can't go wrong for that kind of money, that's about £25 - £30 for that sound. I love valve amps and have had one for years (Engl) but made the switch to full digital about 6 months ago and I don't look back. Axe-Fx is definitely one of my best investments, it does everything and then some :D
