...Experiencing first hand how someone could be disappointed in a mask they might get/have.
I feel like this mask taught me a lot. and wearing it to my first con has opened my eyes to commissioner woes etc. I feel like I'm about to give myself a dissatisfied owner review. And It feels really silly and funny. but I feel like I really have to do this to grow a little.
Okay well first off!!!!
Time frame
~This was made just before RF as a heavily rushed head. As I had many things I should have been doing and feel bad every time I try and make something for myself that was not going to go to fund other projects etc. But I couldn't stand not having anything for myself this far along. And while I couldn't fathom how I was going to bring over my crys monster anthro design into costume form. I changed her design a little. Built actually off of a slightly modded (only the nostrils!) snow leopard base with larger eyes than I would normally use on a snow leopard! (actually was made with the first pull which was really dirty and icky and wouldn't have been used well for anything besides something for me btw)
Aesthetic
~I think the thing I dislike the most about the aesthetic is how FAST I tried to shave it to get it done. (partially to rush it so I wasn't spending too much time on it and also partly to see how it would look in the end because I was way too FLIPPIN excited to have the final product. Also painting the pink in the ears. I dislike painting large areas of fur. I realize at times it's necessary but I am beginning to not be able to stand it at all lol. It looks odd to me. and I really should have used pink fur -_- but I didn't really have any to use 0.0 or at least that would be realistic enough.
Fit
~Somehow even though I MADE IT. FOR MYSELF. it doesn't even fit me snugly enough. LOL. LOL. could be due to rushing it. and just being like. I need this to be done nowwww. also making way for the weight of the horns perhaps I wasn't used to previously. as horns this large are kind of a new thing for me! and it was my choice to use them in lue of smaller horns. I just loved their shape.
Anyhow I think the extra weight altered the displacement of hold on my head in areas?
~Awesome horns with screws are from
jawolf by the way! I love them. and I seriously appreciate being able to use them
Wearing it!
~Welll. I think my biggest problem with wearing it anywhere. is that I am 5 friggin feet tall. and I have two giant horns. If people aren't watching for me. It's very easy to hit people with my head. faces, stomachs, chests whatever is at that height when I'm turning my head. I was so afraid of hurting someone. that it made it very not fun to wear. It was rather warm and sweaty in there really fast. but that was partly because I DIDN'T BRING THE BATTERIES FOR MY FREAKING FAN. FKNSDKLNGKLSFDNL.
Other things
~Before wearing it while actually intending to move around at all. I realized that the top jaw just had to be taken out. Did that. Wore it around a little bit really shortly planning on doing the fursuit parade that day a little later.... After short wear the thread holding the ears back had snapped on one ear. and without anything to fix it I just undid the other ear and went through with floppy DERP ears that I felt I needed to kind of nonchalantly hold back every once in a while.
I honestly was so frustrated after wearing it shortly for the fursuit parade and a little earlier that day. that I felt like I wanted to cry. and I wanted to take it off more often than I wanted to leave it on. I remember I threw it on the bed when I got back to the room from being so frustrated with everything about wearing it ;c
and it made me kind of sad.
and then I realized first hand really how disappointing these things can be when they're not made to utmost quality and comfort all together.
I actually brought several masks with me. and the other masks, eagle and tabby cat were worn by me and friends. and were way more fun to wear around for some reason?
I think the thing about horns though is that you can't be super comfy and have horns on your fursuit at the same time Xb I think that may have been one of my biggest problems. I was just so ready to cry at not feeling like I could walk ANYWHERE safely. without running into someone behind me with my horns. But it's not because of the horns themselves it was because I wanted them on the suit. so I just gotta realize that's what it takes when you have that stuff. I guess I just wanted it all Xb
I may be too harsh on myself since I make these things for people. But I feel like it was an odd experience for me and a new one at that!
I really really want to make sure that these little things I experience trouble with don't happen again. or very accidentally. I want everything to be the best it can be and the best I can make it.
Honestly. as a costume maker. I REALLY REALLY have not had the opportunity to wear any of my creations around for long periods of time. Seriously no more than making a short video. Being able to test out my own works before anything is very important and I'm glad I got to do that! As I spend almost all of my time making things but not really using them. As I don't go out much.
really the other masks like the tabby and the eagle, were really fun to wear and everyone that wore them had a fun time in them. So I'm happy for that :)
I just want to get to where I am the best that I can be! I'm glad to learn from my mistakes and figure out better ways to do things until I don't have any more problems!
And I appreciate everyone that helps me and supports me to do that <3

It's good to be honest with yourself about your practice and this is a healthy exercise to write a review on yourself! And as for wearing your other masks more than your 'sona suit I think just says that because it's the animal representation of you, if it's not to the utmost perfection it doesn't feel right and it feels borderline wrong... that's how I am with my suit at present and am working hard to fix that!
great suit, btw!
great suit, btw!
I definitely feel that way about personal characters Xb and I'm pretty sure it's a norm. Sometimes I just want to "play" an eagle or a cat! or a plain old fox :) or an angry werewolf character. instead of playing me. It's almost like the mask is a tomb of yourself 030
but I think that's a little deeper than reality lolol

Damn, I agree, that's a new perspective on things :U It deepens my opinion that my fursona might just be better kept as an "art" character, rather than in costume form. It's also definitely more fun being something you're not, as you can act more and be a character. When I've worn my fursona fursuit, I just act like myself which seems boring in comparison..
I'm really glad to see you do this though. sometimes we need to see our work through the eyes of others!
i'll admit i had a bit of a breakdown myself when my wire snapped for my head fan while we were there, and we weren't prepared for the weight of my tail so the straps weren't strong enough. it was a huge learning experience for both my suit maker and i. ;m;
i tripped at least 5 people with my tail [and at one point myself.] and all of them weren't even in suit /awkward/
but Panda and i were/are communicating to get all the problems fixed so i can't ever be upset with my maker as most of it was completely random on why the hell we had troubles aah

yeah haha, the wire breaking was a completely freak accident though! i'd only lightly worn the suit maybe 3 hours then a wire in the head just snapped in half???
we're also working on a idea of suspenders/harness to help keep the tail up, it might just be foam but it really hurts the spine the longer you wear it [and my scoliosis doesn't help haha]
i just wanted to keep the suit broken or not til halloween is over because painful/broken fan or not i am going to wear it! *determination*

Honestly, you get used to having horns.
At first I was always hitting people in the face, bending down without realizing.
But when you have worn the suit enough it becomes second nature to be aware of what you are doing.
I still get someone every now and then but its rare and usually their fault being too close in my blind spot.

"Before wearing it while actually intending to move around at all. I realized that the top jaw just had to be taken out."
Is this because it was too far into your (human) face? Air was getting caught up in it?
I ask because I own a head made off one of your masks where you also did the jawset, and I ended up having to remove half the top jaw for this reason also.

Ah. The mask I have, the top jawset seemed like it was glued out of place a bit, and stuck too far out. Or maybe it was a canine jawset in a feline mouth so didn't match up. I'm not sure. In any case, I broke off the inner-most half and it solved all problems, and you can't tell from the outside what was done, so it's all good.
After seeing the base mask that one of my friends has for her suit, I am so so very impressed and in love with the work! I hope you keep going and keep growing overall! I would totally love to get one in the future just for a badass dragon/hybrid suit! I especially love how the eyes look awesome and almost like you are giving a scary grin in the pic on the right. Love it!

She is totally awesome and the base mask looked so neato! She told me about you and I was like OMGSLKDHS:ALKJF:SD"

Hearing this from a suit maker really makes me respect them a whole lot more, it takes a lot for one to admit their own faults which strengthens their character as a person
I'm really thrilled to hear your review on this as it is indeed interesting hearing it from the makers point of view.
In turn I'm also glad this was a good experience; I know you'll get even better from learning this as all people do!
Keep up the great work your creations are always so extravagant <3

This was so neat to read <3 I think this is why some suit makers commission OTHER suit makers to make their sonas. You are your own worst critic when it comes to your work, and my first sona head felt the same way. But now that ive been honing my abilities, im becoming more and more confident in my skill and work! As soon as nicole is finished, I'll post a before and after of the old and new head xD its quite a difference!
I also agree that pink fur on the inside of her ears would have looked best <3

I feel this way about my own first partial as well. I built it on a DVC small k9 for a personal mask, but unfortunately I had to rush it because in my crazy rush to wear it around I offered to help someone in my film course with a furry-themed project and jumped on board before I could set a suitable deadline. In doing this the furring job was pretty botched and I abused hot glue in a way that honestly makes me disgusted with myself. And until I can find the right way to trim it and shave it down, it just looks scruffy and bizarre because I couldn't find apoxie sculpt anywhere for the eyelids/gums. That and it looks too large on my head given my proportions.
However, my close friend can pull off this suit perfectly (including performance in it) and I'm showing a lot more enthusiasm in possibly making a second suit - this time for him, if he ever wants one. I think there's a level of subconscious "I need to get this right so they're happy with it" that comes into making a suit, which is probably the only real reason I managed to finish my own partial for a shared project.
The thing is, though, you have to be nice to yourself and take it as a learning experience. Without the faults and mistakes, I wouldn't have the confidence boost to know what not to do next time. I've gained more experience points to level up, so to speak, and so have you. By being honest, you're also giving truthful and genuine information to your customers so that they know what to expect, but also to see that yes, you are learning and aware of any faults to correct in future projects.
Personally, I love the shape of the face! Using a snow leopard blank was a good idea, it gives the character that friendly expression that helps register emotion so well. I also love how you shade your masks (not just this one, but your masks in general - particularly the fox ones). You've done a respectable job and that's something you should congratulate yourself for. Once your confidence builds I may try to get a commission from you in future, compare it to my own work and both of us can learn what to do to make better suits for next time round. Have fun with it.

Wow! Well thats something you dont see allot of suit makers do. Props for posting your own review on your own suit. I had some issues with the head you send me as well but as a suit maker myself i understand and honestly dont care because i just love how it looks! I love my nero head. I have him displayed on a manequin in my room
Sadly I've experienced some odd things with the fox base I made. as the first sculpt I did when I got back. he's a little smaller than other ones I've made since. so it's a tight fit which causes other wearability issues ;_; realizing this I'm definitely planning on sculpting a bit over a cast of it and remaking the fox.
Good for you on an honest review of yourself, usually people can't even take critique from other people, nevermind be honest enough to give it to themselves! FWIW, I think that head looks awesome, and you've made me even more determined to make myself a fullsuit to wear to a con in the early spring, because I also haven't had any chance to wear my costumes for long periods of time.
I went through the same thing just recently and its a hard process. Even though the striped hyena I just made is probably my best head so far in aesthetics its vision and jaw were sub-par. I was so frustrated with myself that I'm now redesigning the way I do my heads, and am drawing inspiration from the way I used to do my heads before I got started doing resin. So far I've been absurdly pleased with my progress. Reading this post reassures me that I'm not the only one with these problems!
