Not for the first time, and probably not for the last, Zoey found herself getting arrested after getting into yet another barfight in yet another town. No one knows whether she's the one that started it, but as beaten up as she looks, she came out far better than her antagonisers.
Why the finger? Well, going through the system a few times lends one to a bit of cockiness. Being told not to cover the date on your card gives an excuse to show defiance.
I figure this was probably a short while before she met Mace in the story, so a few years prior to the main events. This is the censored version with her "Have A Nice Day" smiley. I might post the uncensored one with her gesture of not-giving-a-damn a bit later.

Oh the tech isn't going to be Star Trek-level or anything like that. Think somewhere between the world now and something like Ghost in the Shell. It's pretty much the same as modern day, but with holographic displays, some amount of nanotech, and alternate fuel sources.
