His extremely realistic style, coupled with his subjects that were typically reserved for cartoonish renderings are what initially sparked an interest for me. Characters that are most commonly reserved for toon style drawings like, the TMNT cast, Super Meat Boy, Masters of the Universe, Tetsuo Shima and Brock Sampson, all end up coming out in startling realism. That, and his overall composition is just top notch. Not gonna lie though, the style and composition that you are able to deliver is allowing you to steadily climb my 'favorite artist' list. The subject matter is just a pleasant bonus.
Very well put! I really love how he maintains the original character designs as opposed to adding unnecessary alterations or details. He does an incredible job of showcasing these classic cartoon and comic book characters how we invisioned them as kids while staying faithful to the originals. His own character designs are top notch too and he's great at realistic renderings as well as his stylized work, really dynamic guy. And thank you, I hope to be half the artist Dave is and I'm glad you enjoy my stuff.
Not to toot my horn, but I do have a way with the written word. But a lack of consistent focus and more than a little procrastination have hampered me in making much progress in the stories that I started writing about a decade ago. About a dozen rough drafts for stories of various lengths, one or two of which are shaping up to be novel length, sit in various states of completion in a binder(none of which are 100% done.) But, I will say that I made good progress on some of them over the last 2 years. But, back to the topic at hand. You seem to have a certain degree of pliability regarding style and composition. Softening the details and color pallet a little to compensate for the more cartoonish characters(i.e. your Road Rovers pieces.) That way, they have that look that's indicative of your artistic style, while still retaining some of their original charm. But hey, retaining some of the charm from the source material is actually a good thing. As for Dave, Skull and Shark, nuff said(though I'm not sure what became of that, seemed like a bad ass concept for a comic.) God, I need to put this kind of energy into writing my stories instead of comments.
I feel ya on that! It's definitely difficult to keep momentum going especially when you're in a slump or running dry on inspiration. But that's awesome you have work that's 10 years in the making, it boggles my mind how writers can keep something as large as a novel organized and planned out.
Thanks! I like to experiment a lot with styles which sometimes leaves me feeling a bit scattered but I also like to have adaptability. Dave is awesome at working in different styles, he has great line work while still pushing his realistic paintings to the next level. And yeah, Skull and Shark is badass and Lazerhawk's music compliments it so well. Awesome to talk with someone who also loves his work!
Best of luck with your projects, I'd love to read you work sometime. I also really dig your sky photography. You've got some really awesome shots in there.
