It's often a good sign when, upon explaining a commission to an artist, they start laughing hysterically.
SpartaDog noted that this was one of the most fun commissions he'd worked on when I picked it up, so I think that it was a good sign indeed. :)
There's a bit of a story behind this picture. At Anthrocon, one of the things I'd been looking forward to was a series of events up in the Tabletop Gaming room, playtesting for a P&P game based on the Mass Effect series of video games. Being a huge fan of the series, I wanted to get in on that. I almost failed to do so, because I didn't realize that
SteeltheWarrior and crew were starting up on it, but I managed to sneak in just in time. :) We already had an Adept, and I tend to be fond of 'mage'-type characters, so a Quarian Engineer had actually been my second choice before I even looked at the character sheets that were made up.
I do tend to try to start moderately serious when roleplaying... but this was a wonderfully goofy group. :) And I ended up just rolling with the tone, leading to some delightful moments. This picture captures one of them.
Since I was starting from a premade character, I didn't have my character just too defined yet, but that didn't take long. The objective was to extract a team of engineers, but due to the Reaper activity in the city, we couldn't get close. Our shuttle landed miles from the city, and so our first role actually in the game was a check to see if we'd make the hike without getting fatigued.
I failed terribly, so the other players started joking that all that time in the tech lab had led me to let myself go a bit, the GM immediately dubbing me 'vas Couch'.
The real chaos started when, as we entered the city, I jokingly suggested (panting for effect), "Guys, give me like ten minutes, I'm going to go build a Segway." Everyone started cracking up, save for Steel, who just, after a few moments' consideration, told me to roll for it. THAT roll ended up a critical success...
...and thus the first sign of Riyah's return were the words, "They see me rollin'..." as she came back riding a Segway cobbled together out of parts of wrecked Turian groundcars. At that point, the whole group just lost it for a couple of minutes, the sheer absurdity of it being too much for them to take.
The gag kept going as the session went on, becoming a running joke that every time we stopped, I'd scavenge up something new, like spinning rims or rave lights, things like that.
The Segway ended up laying down its life for the good of the team, sadly, but it was not forgotten... and it was agreed that after Riyah got out of the hospital (due to having gotten beat down to within an inch of her life by the final stand), her first project was to rebuild it... even better than before. :D
