Endless Realms bestiary - Volkodlak
Bestiary artwork for Endless Realms, a D&D-like "pen and paper" fantasy RPG I'm working for.
Mmm, werewolf <3... although, technically, lycanthropes will be a separate creature from this guy, who is based more on Slavic lore. I saved this guy for last in this work block as inspiration XD "Must... get to werewolf...!"

Hahaha, I wish :V... I'd love to play stupidly broken campaign where I got an army of all the fun beastie monsters >_> I want to be this chick XD http://img1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb.....0/05/Art02.jpg
The ambiguity you're referring to makes me think of http://www.furaffinity.net/view/622968/ :b
Anyway, I think with this guy, though, the only reason he'd be upset about a dead person if that someone else stole his kill :b Maybe I'm wrong, though! Lore's not developed on these guys, yet. Maybe they retain some of their human persona, and still have people they care about...?

Haha, yeah, it definitely seems like it could be fun ;)
Volkodlaks are kind of vampires and werewolves in one, and are skinchangers. Historical lore varies, but they're more the "can take their enchanted wolf skin on and off at will" type of creature, rather than someone afflicted with a curse that transforms them against their will, and they're immortal, and will rise from the dead in their bestial form.

Will any werewolf-type creatures be playable races? I get the feeling this guy might be a bit overpowered for a first level character, but might there be a way to play a werewolf?
One possible way to get past the problem of "werewolf-type creatures should be playable, but are too powerful for early characters" would be to make it so that you couldn't start the game as one, but you could eventually become one due to a special ritual or level-up power, or perhaps even an old-fashioned magic bite.

Yes, I imagine there will be a lycanthrope template thingie, so you could start as a level 1 werewolf perhaps. And yeah, I don't know how you'd go about making a player version of this guy, other than setting minimum requirements for level/stats/whatever or some other form of restriction/cost, so you can't make one right off the bat, so that whenever you DO meet the requirements, then you can become one :b
Or, if you were a level 1 lycanthrope, you can shapeshift, but no control over it, more detriment than aid, might attack your party and stuff, but maybe as you level you actually gain control over your powers. So you could play, say, a lawful good lycanthrope who can shift at will and doesn't just go on a wild rampage every time he turns, someone who can use his affliction for good. That might be cool - would balance out in having pretty crappy drawbacks to start with, but pretty awesome payout in the end.

Heh, cool :b Just yeah, the sort of general concept of balance - if you want to be extra OP in the end game, gotta earn it :b That's the way my husband always saw mages: they're fragile, vulnerable, and spend most of their time slinging, but they eventually basically become mini-gods if you stick it out to the end :b
Yeah, I like that idea a lot.
I think that at first, your werewolf nature would pretty much just be a curse, and at early levels you'd be much better off without it, but then when you're at mid-level you could control yourself much better when in your werewolf form(though you couldn't completely control when to transform), but then at very high levels you could transform at will, keep all of your IQ points in your werewolf shape, and basically just be the terror of the battlefield.
What do you(and the game developers) think of that sort of idea?

I'm not sure, I haven't really talked with the director about it, and I usually don't like to interfere much, but I am one of the "furrier" people on the team :V We have a girly girl, min-maxers, PvPers, lore/RP-focused players... but when there's a "would furries like X?" question they ask me XD I actually don't consider myself a furry, but having worked with them and been on furry sites for years, I certainly know them as a community and interest group better than they do :b
Heh, a little bit, although he has long hind legs, too. Just wanted to go for that "feral humanoid" build, like Disney's Beast, the type of werewolf that's happy running around on all fours as well as being able to go around on hind legs and still use his hands for dextrous manipulation of things.
Haha, well, hmm... If I'm not mistaken, gorillas are actually on the small end amongst primates :V Either way, I'm not sure how he's hung XD ((Although werewolves and other bestial shapeshifters are often a kind of embodiment of feral/bestial tendencies, which, aside from a hulking build and ill temper, could possibly include a powerful/ravenous sex drive, so... I'm sure an argument could be made for it if you really wanted XD ))

Haha, I think that's why I always really was drawn to werewolves - not specifically the sexual drive part (haha), but that they represent, like... a kind freedom of expression. There's no inhibition or restraint or stopping to consider the consequences - they're just wild, pure instinct and emotion and drive. Although I don't really seem like it in the normal sense, I'm actually super-inhibited in real life, overthink everything, so that aspect of werewolves always appealed to me as expressing the exact thing I can't :b.
Yes, that's about it. But also not running to the other extreme of MAJJESTIK WOOF SPIRRIT, as wielder might put it (well, maybe the author does get a bit schmaltzy towards the end). It's just the narrator getting pulled into being a werewolf, and then having to... deal with it. There are plenty of good old well-worn werewolf tropes (hard-as-nails crazy werewolf hunter, rediscovering one's animalistic sexuality, becoming a creature of nature &c. &c.), and to us werewolf fans the book shows its quarter-century age, but I still think it's time I read it again.
Yeah, I can see the Beast build you mention. There appears to be more shoulder/forelimb muscle than haunch.
Also, you're correct about gorillas! That's what I was saying......just a little lump hinting at a sheath(I assume), so yeah, kinda reminds me of evil gorillas.
On the plus side, when I likely try this game, I won't mind roasting these things
As for more useful feedback, though I doubt this is news to you, but your fur and muscle structure are quite impressive, and great coloration too.

*nods* I think it's also kind of the way I've drawn him. Sort of scrunched up at the shoulder, but with his arm exposed, with his legs sort of curled up under and slightly further away, emphasizes his arm more than I meant to :V
Haha, yeah, I wasn't sure which way you meant :V Again, as this isn't a strictly adult game and most normal people find unnecessary addition of animal genitalia unsightly, I didn't want to make an obvious sheath or anything :b But yeah, there's sort of a suggestion of one there, I guess :V Not trying to make any official statements regarding his junk, though :V XD
I imagine these guys would be very satisfying to down :b Plus you'd get a killer rug out of them :V Just don't try to wear it or you'll end up one of them ;)
Thank you kindly, feedback in most any form is really appreciated :)

If you want to give yourself more, shall we say, options for concealment, then you could just draw a female version of this type of creature.
You still couldn't have the "camera" face her straight on or anything, but you could draw this type of side angle without having to put as much effort into "covering things up," as what needs to be hidden is relatively small and unobtrusive.
On a related note, would there be an important difference between the males and females of this species(such as different types of magic abilities, or a very different role in the "pack," or the like), or would the females basically be just the same as the males except for the obvious differences?

There's no statistical difference whatsoever between genders, I don't think. There is, however, some differences lorewise depending on what race you pick. We have a female-only race, a genderless race, a race where the males are bigger/stronger/dominant (although not reflected in stats), and a race where the female are bigger/stronger/dominant (again not reflected in stats), as well as a number of races where the genders are more or less entirely equal.
Thank you very much! No, I don't think it is, exactly, but the lore hasn't been worked out. There is a way for volkodlaks to "reproduce", as it were, but it's not as simple as just biting a person - sort of like how in most vampire lore, you don't become a vampire just by being bitten once.
