Being what appears to be a Colt 1851 Navy, this weapon was before modern cartridge ammo, which means the percussion caps (basically the primer, what the hammer hits to fire the weapon) has to be added manually. Without them the gun is basically unloaded. The bullet, charge, and percussion caps were often loaded separately.
Basically, those grey metal pegs would have brass percussion caps on them.

Really it's a technical detail. Not many people would notice, being in the day and age of modern ammunition.
