I've loved Super Smash Bros ever since I was 5 years old. It was the second game I ever played after Pokemon Red and I've stuck with the series to this day. It's one of the most fun multiplayer games there is, and it's th game I have the most fun playing with friends.
Or, well, it USED to be, until I played against Raven.
I hate to be a sore loser, and I probably sound like a whiney bitch right now, but I find it really hard to enjoy playing a game with someone when I always lose, and usually pretty badly at that. I don't want to win every time or even most of the time, I just want it to be at least some of the time. And before you argue that I've won against him before, let me make it perfectly clear that that ONLY happens when he goes easy on me, and even then it doesn't always happen, so in my book, that's not a real victory.
Now, I'm not throwing a temper tantrum because I want to be better at the game than him, by any means. I know full and well that will never happen. All I want is for us to be on an even playing field so I can enjoy playing one of my favorite games again with one of my best friends. But, the way it's looking, that will probably also never happen, despite my best efforts. I dunno, maybe I'll keep trying, but so far, it seems like every time I make a little bit of improvement, he makes just as much and I end up back where I started. It just has me really upset and I don't know what to do except admit defeat and stop playing.
So, yeah. Sorry for the vent art.

its ok i know how you feel. it is a game and a fun one when you laugh your ass off at something that happens, but yeah i have had angry moments too and sometimes you gotta step it up cause there are players that taunt the ever living shit out of ya. its a bit of a learning curve ill tell you that XD
The primary problem of competitive games - no matter how it's good, it starts to suck when you start to suck :D
I had same "relationship" with Quake 3 (and for now with Quake Live): I play this game for 13 years (one of my first PC games I ever played, actually), yet still I manage to ocasionally find someone who beats my ass to a pulp and kills any desire to play for a month or two.

It's hard for me to give you advice on this subject. I mean, we are both in the same situation, but we are taking this game on two different levels. All I can say is to not give up and analyze what you are currently doing to get better. I remember telling you to watch tournament matches to get a feel for what certain characters can do. It doesn't matter if you don't want to be competitive or not, it still helps you have an edge on your opponents. I have no doubt that that friend of yours probably does the same, especially if that's the same guy that I played.
I honestly can't give any real advice that you probably haven't heard before. It's the same thing people tell me when I say that I can't draw and I wish that I could. Just do it and never stop. It isn't easy. Wishing for skill won't give you anything. In the end, it all boils down to whether or not you have the drive to do what you say you want to do. In you I see a kindred spirit. I've gone through this situation before, to the point where I broke down and cried due to my continuous failures, and I'm still here. I'm done talking now. This decision is yours to make, and I have no choice but to respect it either way.
one more thing i got to say is drop it that you can be better then some or want to as i say we all got skills where good in and others where we are not
just drop it and accept even thou you don't want to deeply
and/or find people equal if maybe a little lower then you skill level
tbh you just have to accept and move on spot letting it eat at you

I'm bad at a LOT of games, especially competitive games. However, to let my nerd side show for a bit...in Star Trek: The Next Generation, there was someone Data could NOT beat in what was essentially future chess.
Then he realized his mistake. He was focusing on himself winning. Instead, he pulled the matches into a stalemate.
It's the same mistake I've made countless times. So, if you can't beat your friend, find ways to nullify their strategies. No matter what people say, everyone has a strategy when they play Smash Bros. Myself, I use Fox and just outpace them, unless they use Falcon, then I'm kinda boned.
If that fials, then why not ask your friend to help you get better, so you can enjoy playing together?

I know how you feel, I have this same problem with people I play against. My ex-girlfriend years and years back in Brawl kicked my ass all the time and I only won if I got lucky. In Brawl and the current incarnation, when I play my friend Tart, he kicks my ass all the time. The rare odd win I get is usually by luck or he wasn't at his full level. He's tried to train me and help me get better, and showed me videos to watch of my favourite characters (Lucario, Pikachu, and Greninja namely) but it's still not fully helping.
I've played the series since Smash 64 as well, always for fun and commonly all alone because I had no friends or anything to play with. I've always enjoyed the game casually, never took it too seriously. But yet still it feels frustrating when I go up against people superior to me who are more competitive and just get my ass kicked. It makes me feel as if I'm not as good as I once thought. And the truth of it is, I am worse than many of the friends who'd want to play with me. The people I'm better than rarely ever play or practice at all or just flat out have no skill, so they're easy to beat. I don't know what to suggest if your friend continues to stay better than you, since I'm in the same position; Tart always will be better than me. I guess we have to accept it, but I'm sure if we both keep at it, we'll get past them eventually. As long as you keep it close, you should feel like it's a moral victory at least, and take it that way instead.
Just keep at it and don't give up, you'll break through eventually. And if you love the game, you shouldn't allow somebody to discourage you from playing it.

You should do what I do! Train your little heart out. What I did was got myself an Amiibo, trained it to level 50 by putting it in harsh battling conditions (like 1v7 smash) and then fighting against/with it. Also learning to play with different characters and watching tutorials helped me a lot too. Heck, like three days ago I JUST learned how to roll. xD And I STILL haven't gotten the hang of it.
I have a friend that's just like the one you're talking about named Gary. He played as Meta Knight and Lucario in brawl and beat all of our asses everytime. Hell yes I got upset about it. You bet I cried when I got home over feeling pathetic. But that didn't stop me from playing because it was funny how I died (most cases I like to laugh it off!) and it's still playing with my friends that got me into smash in the first place.
I know I'm not one of your friends and you don't know me at all, but maybe we can train together one day! I'm sure it'd be a blast and a half.

i know that feel D: my husband is a pro-level smasher. But i've had him teach me, and after many years, i can actually hold my own against him sometimes, especially if we do the right character match ups. I play a purple yoshi in Smash 4 too! And I'm finally getting pretty okay with him... Hope you stick with it, us purple yoshis gotta stick together :)
Sounds like Me vs. My cousin. I never owned the game until the DS version, so I could only ever play it during the summer when he visited. This story is primarily about melee and Brawl, but he was a Master Marth. in 5 man stock, I could rarely get him down 1 life, because he could constantly counter everything I did. I admit I was also sorely inexperienced, but still, it was pretty defeating.
But... keep playing. Look at it like this: if he's THAT good, then he's probably one of the better teachers you'll have. Trial by Fire and all that.
Either way, Have fun.

Neither was my cousin. He just said the old fashioned equivalent of "Git gud"
But try paying attention to what he's doing. If you know he's better than you, then know how your own counters are preformed.
"He's standing at the corner as i'm falling, so he's probably going to do his side smash to throw me back and KO me".
If you know thats what is going to happen, try to think of something different. if you know he's going to beat you with X, then do something different.
I know this is probably over all bad advice, I'm not that good at teaching either (at least over text) but a lot of it is mindset.

I've always heard you can only get better playing against people stronger than you. This brings some memories too. When I was a child, my brother would beat me all the time, and, of course, I was a sore loser back then, but I still had a bit of fun. Move forward to around tween or teens, around the time of the last console generation (probably somewhere early, I have a shit memory) I used to have a Mexican friend, and once again, he would still beat me all the time, at least I had fun. Then not so long ago, about a year, he wanted me to... use my mouth, and we only grew more and more distanced since then. Now move on to today, with me, a friend, and 3DS SSB. Although he can beat Lv. 9 CPUs, and I struggle immensely with Lv. 4 CPUs. Although he downright smashes me, even with the lowest of low tier characters, I somehow have fun regardless. Although I suck balls at video games, I still somehow have fun.
This catches my attention, I agree with you. I have that problem too, I win some and I lose some, but if I happen to keep losing on a same guy over and over, thats the problem. Its not the fact that he/she's good, its the fact how they become more assholes then before, taunting you with words that could enrage you. The only thing that I'm concerned is some of the characters NEEDS to be fix. Little mac for example, when he gets you off the edge, there is a presure that he'll use a bullshit move that hits you or Never Flinches. His launch attack is pretty op. Somewhere above 60% damage, you'll be coming close to ko in no time. What I'm trying to say is if you keep losing by a same person repeatetivly, just relax and study his/her tactics. It takes patients to do it just right and Dont be too aggressive. If you like, we can play. I can try to help you as much as possible.
As a fellow Yoshi main, I can see where you're coming from. Smash is hard, especially against some other players. And with some annoying playstyles, mainly the people that camp, pick a sword character or play an annoying character, i.e. Isabelle or Zelda. It can be tempting to drop the game. But all it takes is practice to get better. I have faith in you ^.w.^ Yoshi mains, rise up.
P.s. A good combo for Yoshi (if he is still your main) is side tilt, up tilt, up air, up air, up air. It does way more damage then it should amd believe it or not, Yoshi is pretty high on the tier list in my book. Even tho ultimate has no tier list as of right now -.w.-;
