"I don't see any flaws. I think it's ready."
"There's still the matter of the inscription."
"Don't bother me with little details, Nicodemus. As long as it works, that's all I care about."
"As you say, Mr. Ages. We'll need to keep this safe. There are those who would covet its power."
"You feel your study is not safe enough?"
"Not safe enough by far. But it will have to do for now."

lorddirk of Mr. Ages and Nicodemus inspecting the ruby medallion after its creation. I felt that it would be nice to explore a bit where the amulet came from that Mrs. Brisby uses, since the artifact is quite a bit of deus ex machine. Lorddirk came up with this, and I think it's quite stunning.

Nice. I've always imagined the amulet was part of a device developed by NIMH to focus and enhance both telekinetic and telepathic abilities. Since the rats (and Mrs. Brisby) were so small it wasn't necessary to have the entire device. A small part of it was enough to do things like lift a cinder block. The flames were from the massive surge in power as they didn't have it hooked up to any kind of capacitor or power soak.
