I couldn't even make 2d drawings look like 3d in art class haha

In some ways that's harder, because with painting (or shading) you can give more visual cues as to the underlying volumes. In 2D you have to use just the silhouette, overlap, and a few contour lines to convey the necessary visual information to make the viewer interpret it as 3D...which is why it's so important to do that first, I think, or so I've been told.

Ctrl Paint has a perspective drawing lesson that's probably great, and I really recommend Drawing On The Right Side of the Brain, if you're looking for my advice.
