Chapter 2
A mild fog shrouded the street save for a few lamps, some of which flickered sporadically. Lenore hardly noticed, withdrawn into introspection about the play, the construction workers, and Theodore. She was always uneasy around him, her fondness for the officer clashed with her noble heritage. She was of royal blood and he was but a humble civil servant. Crazy thoughts of forsaking her name and running off with Theodore to live as he did circulated until she finally banished the daydreams and sighed. It was simply not meant to be. Back in reality, Lenore realized that the air had tinged a fair bit colder. She couldn't place what, but something was wrong.
The street lamps suddenly and unnaturally extinguished, all but the one she stood near. She turned around, uncertain of whether or not there were someone present behind her. The street was mysteriously deserted, she was completely alone. Many times she had walked these streets without fear or anxiety, but now it was all she could feel, as if the very darkness of the night was trying to creep into her. Or at least what she associated darkness with, but it was not cold, it was.....warmth? The sensation was emanating from her neck, specifically her choker. It was the heirloom of her family. A small golden medal engraved with the image of a bird with wings closed. Its warmth did not seem to be fading. It seemed further intensified and felt as if it were seeping into her very body. It was a feeling both distressing and at the same time pleasing.
