Devlin Peabody is an upstanding young wolf. Works his family's farm, minds his parents and his manners, does his homework, looks after the nearby nomadic sheep and makes sure nobody bothers them and helps them with shearing in the summer months. But he has one problem. He really likes to pretend to be a sheep.

This in itself isn't really a problem, as wolves have a proud tradition of using it to get what they want, but for Devlin it is not a means to an end, it is simply a method of fulfillment. As though he actually, shamefully, wants to be a sheep instead of a proud, powerful wolf. Indeed, he is so influenced by this desire that he has a tendency to not find members of his own species attractive.

Bordering on an obsession for the boy, he goes so far as to practice bleating when alone and during his free time, often crafts clothing out of natural wool and create elaborately detailed costumes with real wool and fake pelt backing (all without horns, horns are hard), and hides the works of his guilty pleasure under the floorboards in his room so his traditionally conservative parents will not discover his secret shame...
