Asteroid mining operation. The whole thing crawls across the face of the asteroid, nibbling off bits and running them though the solar refiners. They work a bit like fractioning towers, as material goes along the length, various elements vaporize and get collected in turn. The center can is spun for gee equivelency.

Crawls? I always thought it was imbedded and they were, well, mining in the rock from inside. This makes much more sense.

The scenario needed interstellar transit, but I didn't want it to be too easy or too obviously borrow from other sources (was not aware of similar ideas at the time) and to keep the suspension of disbelief to a minimum, avoided other scifi stock gadgets.

Funny, that two-lobed rock reminds me of comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko, the one the Rosetta probe is studying.
