Nasty nasty rabbits. I remember seeing the top panel featured in a comics magazine in the mid-Eighties that ran an article about the upsurge of anthropomorphic animal comics (back when it was a curious but welcome trend...before the dark times....before the scandals). It made a crack about rabbits being Republicans, as I recall.
Or that the media wasn't going to let a "good story" get in the way of facts. So disallusioning to to see "journalists" going into situations (real news) with their minds already made up as to what and how they are going to tell it, regardless of the facts presented.
I guess I missed any media coverage of anything that could be considered "furry" early on, instead there was chatter related to the boom and later bust of black and white indies and the TMNT phenom. Then, even pre-CSI, the fur-suit freak show. Thankfully, the one issue the real media missed (?) was the "skunk fucker" period.
That would be Amazing Heroes #129, the Special Funny-Animal Issue (Nov 87), in the Steve Gallacci interview. :) Which has a couple of less-clothed Erma pieces, but never put in as sensationalism, just examples of the art. (It also says Zell, Sworddancer isn't dead, but by now...)
I certainly loved that issue, with the realisation that there was a whole fandom behind the type of art, and I started getting a ton of small press and minicomics stuff by mail.
