Here the grade straitens out a bit. The right-of-way following the topography a little bit and using bridges or fills to avoid unnecessary curves. Although the track itself now follows broader curves and longer straightaways it is still a VERY steep 4%. Southbound trains will almost always need a helper locomotive or two to climb up to Slate Range Pass on the route. From there the grade is much more moderate at being 2.5%. Not bad by narrow gauge standards.
The milepost is hidden behind the Mojave Cannonball, though it magically floating in mid-air because I neglected to adjust the height after raising some of the terrain around the track and grade. >_<
