Game Freak knows exactly what they're doing. I'm sure they know about this side of the fandom, are well aware of how to market Pokémon to said fans, and know how to do so while still keeping things subtle enough to be PG. Otherwise there'd be no reason for pheromones of all things to attract humans as well.
