I had this idea a while back, to have two characters sitting on a stoop drinking beers and talking through life's problems. Funny enough I started this painting before Vin Collie got created, but I was a bit late finishing it.
This pic underwent 3 big revisions. It used to be way bigger and showed the whole stoop and the sidewalk. Then I tried a second time cropped a bit in with some different lighting. Then this third time I got some help from the ever incredible CivetStranj (strange-fox) and managed to finish the piece, but not without some struggle.
I was having RIDICULOUS troubles painting the jacket on the fox, and really, large areas of the head and torso in general. As nothing was rendering properly, I decided to go full artsy and grab a handful of texture brushes and just use them EVERYWHERE in the hopes that the baffling overuse of texture would help distract the viewer from my inability to render things well.
It worked pretty well! But it's still clear that the texture use was largely excessive and repetitive. I think it would be nice to redo some parts on the left side of the image and give a little more variety to the texture as opposed to overusing one brush.
Still, I am trying to get used to the mantra of "Finished, Not Perfect".

And honestly, from the metaphorical point of view (mine, anyway), the "Finished, Not Perfect" theme applies well to the subject matter. How problems can make one feel incomplete, that nothing in life is perfectly, crisply defined, and it being visually represented by the texture lines pushing well beyond where the usual outlines of the characters would be. All in all, I say this came out extremely well! :)
yo dawg... ya know... painting jackets is really hard...
got this shirt from muenster...
ya, but--
enough with your jacket!
sheesh, calm down, spottyface - time for 'nother beer?
hm... no. no, I don't want another beer. You know, sitting here every week drowning our problems, this just isn't right.
what you mean?
can you feel the sun gently brush your skin from the side? we should go there. there is such a nice spot by the beach - with grass and benches. tho it's a little dirty up there, you can see all the way to the lighthouse and the little pier
yo... got a point. many points actually. on your nose. lets go
