TwitterWhen animals considered to be "prey" by the apex predators of the world begin to band together for safety, where does it leave those caught in between?
Namely, a pair of pine martens, carnivores and flesh-eaters themselves, but small enough to be considered food for the bears, wolves and gluttons of the forest and field. They're on a journey to seek sanctuary with the rabbits, squirrels and other prey that have gathered to Oren--but they don't know if welcome or condemnation will meet them.

I think you're right, he's Egg and looking at the reaction of the preys when he entered in scene, he's in a position similar to Rask and his presence is only tolerated because he has something to offer to the prey's society. Of course he isn't the leader, a predator would never lead a group of rebel preys. The badger has no spear, yes, a badger doesn't need a spear because he has his own natural weapons, but it seems that their "theeth" are more than weapons for preys, probably it's a symbol too for the warriors of their society (not all animals shown in the pages carry a spear), in this sense, I think they would never give this symbol to an "enemy" as the badger. I'm waiting to see if the true leader, supposed to be Oren, is the porcupine who showed the way to uncle Quanaq.
