This is a re-write of this! If you've read the older version (which will be deleted, eventually), this is mostly a rewrite of the first half; the second half flowed out very nicely all in one sitting, more or less, and had far fewer problems to begin with.
So this is A Departure, once more, with feeling. Feeling, and a more coherent backstory. Enjoy!
Pronunciation guide, for those like me who like to have one:
Raymund - said like it sounds. U instead of O for seasoning.
Handur - hahn-DURE
Qanah - KAH-na, with the Q pronounced like the Arabic ﻕ (like K, but further back in the throat).

Thanks, Expy! There's more, but mostly in my head and in scattered bits on my hard drive. The next chapter to this is part of that collection, and so are two other pieces from the same world, one of which I've been working on for yeeeeeears. I was happy and not a little surprised when this one actually shook all the way loose!
