In Harry Potter, a boggart is a shapeshifter who hides in spaces like desk drawers and cabinets to jump out and shapeshift into the worst fear of whoever it sees. A simple spell, called "Riddikulus," will force the boggart to assume whatever form the caster is mentally focusing on, and having someone with you will confuse the boggart, who won't know what to become, assuming your friend has a different phobia than you.
If my scalesona, Rap, came across a boggart, it would probably assume the form of a large, pissed off wasp. Rap would probably scream his lungs out, to be honest.
