Heh. That's cool. And yeah, that song may be a bit of a punchline, but it IS pretty great. Actually, I think that whole first album is. "Gimme Three Steps" might be my personal fave, but they're all good, and of course "Free Bird" has reached legendary status. They were definitely one of the best of the "Southern Rock" bands. Their dual lead guitar front end was pretty badass.
I'm sort of a crappy guitarist myself, but I suppose with some practice I could hack that song out. -With the possible exception of the faster and more intricate lead parts. That slide part is quite nice. I'm a bit of a sucker for slide guitar.
I actually saw those guys a few times back in the day. They were a lot of fun. I have a rather wide taste in music though...

Lmao nice. Yeah I love a large portion of music from the era, definitely one of my favorites though. I actually saw them live back in October at Exit 111, was a great show.
I do love the slide guitar style a lot as well, which is why I bought a slide to practice with. I'm not the best at it yet, it is quite challenging. I've always been better at rhythm personally anyway lmao, but I practice a lot with many songs doing rhythm and lead. I also play bass really good (better than guitar), from light and relaxing stuff to metal. I'm a very quick learner (Started playing bass last October, and Guitar in January), but it still takes a lot of patience and practice. Play something enough times and you'll figure it out eventually, at least that's how I do it xP

Growing up in the sixties and seventies I sorta cut my teeth on all that classic rock stuff, but my tastes have always leaned towards the weirder, more psychedelic and underground stuff, or just whatever's good from almost any genre. I was lucky enough to be in high school when the punk/ new wave etc. stuff hit, so that was sort of a perfect time for that, and then I got into hip-hop, techno, house, etc. and DJing when that came along.
I started playing guitar when I was ten, and later got into synths, samplers, turntables and other stuff. I've been in bands and done underground radio. I would also say that technically I'm a better bass player. I wouldn't say I'm a great musician. I've always been bad about practicing, important as that is. I'd rather just jam or play with other people if I can. I've been able to do a few cool things here and there though. The most important thing is just to play. Being good isn't important. Personally, I think everybody should do music and/ or art. It's a hell of a lot of fun and a great social exercise.
I noticed that Skynyrd was doing a tour. It would be cool to see them. It's sorta weird to think that out of the whole gang on the first album cover, Gary Rossington is the only one left.
I noticed on looking back over their discography the other day that a couple of the songs from the first two shows I saw of theirs (At Winterland in S.F. in '75 and '76) were added as bonus tracks on CD reissues of theirs, and the whole '76 show was issued as an "Authorized bootleg". I'll have to hunt those down, they would be neat to hear. Youtube also has stuff from the "Day on the Green" show at the Oakland Coliseum in '77, which I was at as well.
