Balto and Jenna were exhausted. They were covered in snow from having to worm their way through it. Their legs were screaming out in pain from their bonds. They couldn’t quench their thirsts by gobbling up the snow that surrounded them, unable to even slip their tongues through their clenched teeth. They couldn’t even pant because of their wrapped-up mouths, taking in rapid, frantic breaths through their noses, trying to fill their starving lungs. They would occasionally grunt out loudly through the gags, partially to call for help and partially to just let out some expression of exasperation.
"Mmmmmm!!"
"Hnnmmm!!"
And throughout all this, they still had not come across a single living thing that could save them and shorten their grueling journey.
They had to stop every once in a while to regain their strength. And each time they did, their minds were continuously filled with the fear that the two men who had done this to them would come up and snatch them back up. After all, Balto and Jenna had left trails in the snow as they dragged their bodies along, so they certainly wouldn’t be that hard to track down.
During these rests, they would also nuzzle and cuddle their bodies against one another, both for warmth and for emotional comfort. It was an act they had performed countless times before, one of their favorite pastimes, and they needed it now more than ever, for their bodies and their spirits.
Jenna once again surprised Balto with her impressive endurance. She didn’t need to stop for breaks that much more frequently then him, and could keep up with him when the two were wriggling their way back to town.
It was the most strenuous and draining thing Jenna had ever done in her life, and the second most for Balto after his serum run. The two were completely miserable. Both of them were moving increasingly slower as time passed, with each wrench forward of their bodies covering less and less of what was already pretty negligible distance. Eventually, they had gone from large thrusts forward to just dragging themselves along one inch at a time. Their stifled moans were getting more hoarse and aggressive as well. Every part of their bodies was telling them to just stop for more than a couple of minutes.
But the two lovers refused to give up. Not when they had gotten so far and made such a miraculous escape. Not after everything they had been through together.
After taking another couple of moments to rest and nuzzle each other, they began another push back to town. They could see the buildings in the distance at this point, giving them a new drive to finish this and get back home, free of the ropes and in the safety of their loved ones.
"Wm gnn mrrg nn!" Jenna muffled.
Balto’s eyes narrowed in determination, thinking the same thing Jenna was: We can do this.
We just have to - *huff* - keep moving.
The market on the edge of town was ready to close up for the day. Most of the employees had made their way out, with only a young clerk named Dillon left, finishing up his duties at the register. It had been a fairly slow day in terms of customers, but what customers did show up had been discussing a robbery that apparently happened in a family home across town, with the family's dog being missing as well.
Said dog was crawling with her mate up to that very market. The tied up couple had almost no energy left, but they had, against all odds, made it back to town. They wanted nothing more than to celebrate, but they weren't done yet. The two had been making their way down the street, screaming as loudly as they could through their gags for anyone that could help them. Their garbled voices were scratchy and cracking from how almost absolutely drained they were. It didn't help that because of the effective gags, they were yelling at the top of their lungs and wearing out their voices even more. They could barely bring themselves to keep shifting themselves forward.
Out of the corner of her eye, Jenna caught a glimpse of a young man in a nearby grocery store. She nudged Balto with her nose and nodded her head in that direction. The wolfdog saw what she wanted him to, and he gasped into his gag as his eyes grew wide.
This was it. They were almost safe. They were beginning to imagine the glorious sensation of finally having these wretched ropes off of them, being free to move and speak once more. They wormed up agonizingly slowly to the front door of the market and frantically, yet weakly, banged their bound front paws against the glass door, coming as close as they could to barking out for help with what may very well have been the last of their strength.
At the sound of a banging at the door and some other unidentifiable noise, a startled Dillon quickly turned to the source of the sound. What he saw was perhaps the last thing he would have expected. There were two dogs, one a brown, scruffy-looking mutt, and the other a red-and-white husky. Their front legs, back legs, and muzzles were all tied up with ropes, and they looked desperate to get his attention.
"What in the - What?!" Dillon was at a loss for words. He bolted over to the front and opened the door. The two dogs immediately squirmed their way inside, still barking out through their bound jaws, though by now it had been reduced to weak whimpering.
"What in the world happened to you two?!" Dillon exclaimed. He ran his hands through their fur, checking them out and trying to figure out what they had just been through. But they still wouldn't stop whimpering. The man then realized that these two undoubtedly would like to be free of those ropes.
"I'll be right back," he said, before darting off down the store. He scoured the aisles until he came across the steak knives that the store sold. Not even paying attention to the price tag, he grabbed one and made his way back to the bound animals.
Balto and Jenna waited in anxiety for the man to return, their chests heaving up and down violently. When he did, they saw that he had a sharp-looking knife in his hand. Their ears instantly perked up and their tails started wagging, the two dogs mumbling through the ropes, both of them ready to be free.
"Okay guys, please try to hold still. I don't wanna hurt you," Dillon said. The canines obliged, not moving a muscle. The man approached Jenna and slowly, carefully wedged the knife underneath the ropes binding her front legs.
Jenna waited patiently as this man worked. The ropes were tough enough that even this knife was having a little trouble cutting through, but unlike their claws it was making progress. It was slowly but surely breaking her forelegs out, with more and more of them becoming visible once more. Jenna didn't think that any greater physical relief could exist when the final strand of rope was cut, and the ropes went slack and fell off. She immediately yanked them apart, sighing deeply through her nose. They were still sore, inevitably, and she rubbed at them slowly. As she did so, her back legs were untied, and that somehow felt even better. The cramped feeling was finally gone, the constant stinging pain alternating with the numbness was finally gone. She splayed her limbs all out, shaking them about to get the blood pumping back in them. They still felt a little too numb for her to stand up with any stability, but she could feel them slowly returning to normal.
Balto smiled underneath the rope muzzle as he saw his mate being freed. He knew that the second he was free, he would give this man the thanking of his life. Eventually, he managed to finish off Jenna's ropes by cutting through her gag. She gasped loudly and took massive gulps of air. Breathe it in, Jen. It's over.
The man then looked over at Balto, but didn't move to start untying him. He looked hesitant to do so, as if he didn't trust him to be friendly like he did with Jenna. Balto pondered why, only to remember that the stigma against him still remained in some townsfolk. Come on, please not now. Any time but now, he thought bitterly. The newly free husky seemed to notice that he hadn't gotten to work on him yet, and shakily got onto her feet for the first time in hours to pad over to him. She rubbed her head into his fur, before she felt herself tiredly collapse onto him. But she still rubbed into him as she looked up to the man with pleading eyes, whining sadly to beg for her love's freedom. Oh, I love this dog, Balto thought.
The man still seemed unsure, but Jenna's actions seemed to convince him that the wolfdog could be trusted. And so he got to work cutting off Balto's ropes. Balto felt every ounce of relief that Jenna had felt as his legs were freed. He made sure to remain still and docile to keep the man's trust. The knife slid underneath the ropes on the top of his muzzle, slowly slicing through at what felt like a snail's pace. Balto didn't risk trying to open his jaws until it was all off. But when it was, he opened them as wide as he ever had and taken the biggest gasp of air as well. He heaved violently, breathing in and out. He shifted around his very sore jaws. He began to uneasily make his way onto his feet, with Jenna supporting him as he did so. Eventually, both canines were on all fours, this time their paws splayed out far apart.
The two mates found themselves with a new burst of energy born of pure relief. They immediately leapt at the man, wrapping their forelegs around him and smothering him with licks across the face. They were still barely holding on, almost forgetting how to move and hold themselves without their restraints.
"Haha, okay, easy guys. You're welcome, now get offa me!" Dillon said with a laugh.
Balto and Jenna eventually backed down, the ache and fatigue of their bodies slowly returning. They then turned their attention to each other. They looked deeply into each other's eyes, gentle smiles forming on each other's faces and a few tears coming to their eyes.
"Balto."
"Jenna."
To hear each other's voices once again, clear and coherent, was the sweetest sound on Earth at that moment. They embraced each other passionately, the tears falling down their faces, Balto draping his forelegs around his mate in a loving embrace. Jenna got a little carried away, leaning so far into his cozy chest that she knocked both of them over. The two laughed heartily, reveling in their regained ability to even do such a thing as laugh, as they licked each other feverishly, another action they had sorely missed.
"Jenna, I'm so sorry," Balto said.
"What? Why?" Jenna asked in surprise.
"I should have been able to get you out of there when I first arrived. We should have been free hours ago, but I failed you. I shouldn't-"
"Stop," Jenna interrupted him sharply. "You haven't failed me. You could never fail me. Just the fact that you came for me, that you did everything you could, is all that I could have ever asked for. That's makes you my hero, not whether you succeed or fail."
Balto lowered his head sheepishly at that.
"Besides," she continued, "You did get me out of there! No one else could have opened that door, let alone tied up like that!"
"Heh, well it was your smart thinking that made it possible," Balto countered.
Jenna blushed at the compliment, but continued. "I still couldn't have done it without you. If anything, I feel horrible for putting you in that mess."
"Jen, this wasn't your fault. How could you have stopped two men by yourself? From what I saw, you put up one heck of a fight. You even figured out how to escape!"
The husky knew he had a point. She didn't think she'd be of any help down there, but she had proven herself wrong. And in making the grueling journey home, she realized that she was capable of more than she had initially thought.
"Let's just stop blaming ourselves, because it doesn't matter what could have been done differently," she said. "We're okay. Because we escaped and got back home. Together."
It was true. This situation, while terrifying, had managed to bring out the best in both of them. They had shown once again why they were so good together, and how strong their love was.
The husky shifted herself on top of her mate, looking him in the eyes. "You don't have to keep proving yourself or keep being the hero for me. You will always be the best mate, and best friend, that I could have ever asked for, Balto … I love you. So, so much."
Balto let her words set in, taking in her sweet, beautiful voice. He believed her, seeing now that nothing would lessen him in her eyes. "I love you, too. I love you."
They just lay there at peace in each other's embrace for the next several minutes. Balto held the precious husky tightly to his chest, and Jenna buried herself into his sacred warmth. They had completely forgotten about the man still sitting there, forgotten about the two robbers that were still out there with many stolen belongings. They were too preoccupied with tenderly licking and nuzzling, whispering to each other, and being grateful for the other's presence. At long last, this horrible nightmare was over. They were free, they were safe, and they were together. And right now, they couldn't have asked for anything else.

Not as good as your solo Jenna story, but then again, this WAS one of the very first stories you've ever written. Of course there were gonna be some issues with the older stuff; that just goes to show how much you've improved! :)
Decent story, dude! Now, onward to Jt's sequel to this story on DA!
Decent story, dude! Now, onward to Jt's sequel to this story on DA!
I know, giving it another look over made me go, "Ugh, why did I do that?" at a few of the choices. But again, the concept alone and many of the highlights still make me regard it highly. When I get the majority of my desires stories finished, I definitely look forward to "remastering" this one to what it deserves to be. Thanks for the comment!
